The definition of mix proportions that can fulfil the different properties required for the repair material may be rather difficult. A wide variety of commercial premixed products of proprietary compositions are available that can suit different requirements. Specifications for the repair mortars should, however, be clear in order to allow the selection of an appropriate material. [Pg.339]

ANFO is available as a premixed product, or it can be delivered in bulk and mixed on site immediately before loading. Manufacturers often deliver the product in combination tank trucks that are equipped to mix the AN and fuel oil as they are loaded into the borehole via pump or auger. A common procedure for the preparation of vinylated alkyds is as foUows. A base alkyd resin is brought to the desired endpoint. The resin is then cooled to about 160°C and often diluted with aromatic thinner. The desired monomer is added, usually at about 20 —60% based on the final product, foUowed by an appropriate amount of a free radical initiator. Alternatively, a premix of the monomer and the initiator is added at a controUed rate over most of the reaction. The reaction is brought to monomer reflux, until the residual monomer content has fallen below a specified level. Residual monomer, if any, is stripped away before the product is diluted in a solvent, filtered, and packaged. [Pg.42]

Reactor Internals and Unit Hardware. Requirements for mixing feed components or separating products may determine minimum pilot unit size. If reactants caimot be premixed before they are passed into the reactor, the effectiveness of the inlet distributor in mixing the reactants can markedly affect reactor performance. The biotin market is divided between agricultural and human use, with —90% of biotin used in the animal health care market and —10% for the human nutritional market. The major producers of biotin are Hoffmann-La Roche, Lon2a, E. Merck-Darmstadt, Rhc ne-Poulenc, Sumitomo Pharmaceutical, E. Sung, and Tanabe Seiyaku (100). Worldwide production of biotin in 1994 was approximately 60 metric tons. The Hst price for pure biotin in 1995 was — 7.00/g whereas, the Hst price for technical feed-grade biotin was — 5.50/g. Biotin is used in various pharmaceutical, food, and special dietary products, including multivitamin preparations in Hquid, tablet, capsule, or powder forms. Spectrophotometric deterrnination at 550 nm is relatively insensitive and is useful for the deterrnination of vitamin B 2 in high potency products such as premixes. Thin-layer chromatography and open-column chromatography have been appHed to both the direct assay of cobalamins and to the fractionation and removal of interfering substances from sample extracts prior to microbiological or radioassay. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry of cobalt has been proposed for the deterrnination of vitamin B 2 in dry feeds. These are otherwise known as atmospheric or premix burners. Primary air is entrained into the gas stream prior to exit from the nozzle. The best known of these types is the Bunsen burner, and the most common is the ring-type domestic cooker hob arrangement. Both aerated and non-aerated types are often found in a bar configuration. Hydrolysis, although a simple method in theory, yields terephthalic acid (TPA), which must be purified by several recrystallizations. The TPA must be specially pretreated to blend with ethylene glycol to form premixes and slurries of the right viscosities to be handled and conveyed in modern direct polyesterification plants. Hie product of the alkaline hydrolysis of PET includes TPA salts, which must be neutralized with a mineral acid in order to collect the TPA. Polymer and coating chemists use computer models to predict the properties of formulated products from the characteristics of the raw materials and processing conditions (1, 2). Usually, the chemist supplies the identification and amounts of the materials. The software retrieves raw material property data needed for the modelling calculations from a raw material database. However, the chemist often works with groups of materials that are used as a unit. For instance, intermediates used in multiple products or premixes are themselves formulated products, not raw materials in the sense of being purchased or basic chemical species. Also, some ingredients are often used in constant ratio. In these cases, experimentation and calculation are simplified if the chemist can refer to these sets of materials as a unit, even though the unit may not be part of the raw material database. [Pg.54]
