A common reason for the premature failure of batteries in RAPS systems has been the use of poor quality, or inappropriately designed, batteries. Battery choice is usually determined by economic constraints. Unfortunately, the cheaper the battery, the poorer is the performance. It should also be recognized that some system suppliers lack a fundamental understanding of the lead-acid battery. [Pg.482]

Eco is a powerful tool for defining the active sites of serine protease due to the extended substrate-like interaction that it makes with the protease. The three-dimensional structure of a complex with eco has many advantages that a structure of a protease alone or bound to a small molecule inhibitor does not have. Eco can be used to take a molecular impression of the serine protease active site and reveal features that determine substrate preference. These features are used to design specific inhibitors with therapeutic prospects. Often, a small molecule inhibitor is used to define a protease active site cleft, but the resulting structures have particular drawbacks. Typically, a small molecule inhibitor lacks the prime side interac-... [Pg.175]

The existing instruments for resonance scattering experiments may be classified according to the monochromator system. As synchrotron radiation is highly polarized in the plane of the orbit, the vertical reflection by the monochromator crystals is preferred. Under these conditions the polarization factor remains nearly constant. With reference to this design feature, the following arrangements exist or are under construction ... [Pg.140]

The mechanical design features of sieve plates are described in this section. The same general construction is also used for bubble-cap and valve plates. Details of the various types of bubble caps used and the preferred dimensions of standard... [Pg.713]

Among the reasons for this extreme cost growth is that the American vendors of mass burning systems do not have as many "bell and whistle" design features as the European systems. The American purchaser has not previously feared corrosion enough to demand protective features. The American buyer often concentrates more on the lowest bid while the European buyer prefers a reliable system of which he and the community can be proud. [Pg.69]

In line with the strong preferences given to "proven design" features and solutions in the development work, - an approach that was firmly supported by TVO, - it is easily concluded that the design of the reactor has changed very little, and that the nuclear island as a whole has not been changed much. [Pg.40]

If the site evaluation for these five factors, including their foreseeable evolution, indicates that the site is unacceptable and these deficiencies of the site cannot be compensated for by means of design features, site protection measures or administrative procedures, the site shall be deemed unsuitable. (Design features and site protection measures are the preferred means of compensating for deficiencies.)... [Pg.31]

One of the most important detector design features is the ability to rapidly and conveniently extract the working electrode, in order to prepare its surface by polishing, etc. Tubular cells are somewhat Inconvenient in that the electrode surface is curved and difficult to dean or inspect. For routine work therefore, flat electrodes such as the various disc geometries are preferred ... [Pg.633]

Flextronics International has excelled as a contract manufacturer for electronics that included cell phones. As it worked on contracted volumes, it was sheltered from market uncertainties and had ample opportunity to stand out in its internal capabilities. In early 2000s, it decided to compete as an ODM (original design and manufacture), that required it to assess customers preferences, design appropriate features in the cell phone so as to satisfy the customer, manufacture it, and sell it to a service provider through an OEM (Huckman and Pisano 2006). In doing so, it had to develop the customer facing capabilities of market-analysis and development of product architecture. In addition, it was now exposed to the market side risk in price and sales volume. The transition was successful, as the company took care to build the additional capabilities. [Pg.21]
