Zipeprol [34758-83-3] (58) is another European antitussive with a wide range of pharmacological effects, including antispasmodic, antihistaminic, and local anesthetic activities (85,86). It has been reported that zipeprol has been abused in Italy because high doses cause hallucinations (87). Spontaneous withdrawal symptoms similar to those of opiates have been observed withdrawal symptoms can also be precipitated by naloxone. Zipeprol can be... [Pg.525]

The basic compound is a triterpene glycoside. It is extracted from the licorice root, of which the principal sources are China, Russia, Spain, Italy, France, Iran, Iraq, and Turkey. The roots, containing 10% moisture, are dned and shredded, after which they are extracted with aqueous ammonia, concentrated in vacuum evaporators, precipitated with sulfuric acid, and crystallized with 95% ethyl alcohol. [Pg.1590]

Lefetamine is an opioid receptor partial agonist, which combines the actions of amphetamines with opioid-Uke effects. It was a drug of abuse in Japan in the 1950s and later also in Italy (1). In 10 opiate addicts, lefetamine relieved acute opiate withdrawal symptoms and did not precipitate withdrawal symptoms in stable addicts (2). [Pg.2015]

Researchers at the Department of Infectious Diseases at G. d Annunzio University in Chieti Scalo, Italy, studied the possible factors that trigger the onset of CFS. Their findings substantiate what many sufferers of CFS already know an exposure to chemical and/or food toxins is frequently a precipitating factor for the disease.15... [Pg.61]

This is the typical Italian grape-based pomace distillate. Produced and kept with a higher alcohol content, before sale it is diluted with water to a content of between 38% and 60% alcohol by volume (usually 42-43%) and filtered. As a consequence of water dilution, haze and turbidity of the product may occur. The elemental composition of grappa is related in particular to the stability of the product -mainly caused by Cu, Fe and related colour changes, and Ca and Mg precipitations with sulphates - and the presence of heavy metals eventually leached by distillation apparatus, tanks and pumps, wooden casks, filter pads and glass bottles. A survey of limpid and apparently stabile 58 grappa samples produced in northern Italy, some processed by very small distilleries, is shown in Table 8.10. The data show that the maximum values of several elements are clearly due to the cited leaching phenomena. [Pg.319]

Thymostimulin (TS) is an extract of calf thymus glands that has been partially purified by Falchetti et al. (1977) in Italy. Calf thymus tissue is first minced and extracted with ammonium acetate. This extract is then fractionated with ammonium sulfate precipitation. The 0-25% ammonium sulfate cut is further purified by ultrafiltration on an Amicon PM-10 membrane, desalted on Sephadex G-25, and gel filtered on Sephadex G-50. The biologically active preparation exhibits two predominant bands on polyacrylamide gels at pH 8.6. At the present time there have been no attempts to further define the constituents of this partially purified preparation. Although TS is similar to thymosin fraction 5 in its purification schema, a 0-25% ammonium sulfate precipitation step is used, whereas a 25-50% saturation fractionation cut is employed for the isolation of thymosin fraction 5. In addition, the purification procedure for TF5 includes an acetone precipitation step, whereas this procedure is not included in the preparation of TS. Thus, there... [Pg.239]
