Calcium carbonate occurs in nature as hmestone in various forms, such as marble, chalk, and coral. It is probably the most widely-used raw material in the chemical industry. It has numerous apphcations, primarily to produce cement, mortars, plasters, refractories, and glass as budding materials. It also is used to produce quicklime, hydrated lime and a number of calcium compounds. It is produced either as powdered or precipitated calcium carbonate. The latter consists of finer particles of greater purity and more uniform size. They also have many important commercial apphcations. Various grades of precipitated calcium carbonate are used in several products, such as textiles, papers, paints, plastics, adhesives, sealants, and cosmetics. [Pg.159]

Sulfite paper has a relatively short life span, since residual acid will continue to hydrolyze the cellulose and cause embrittlement. Further sources of acid include aluminum sulfate (which is added together with resin to suppress bleeding or feathering of ink into the paper) and S02 and NO from the atmosphere. Much of the world s library collections and archives will soon be lost as the paper crumbles. Various deacidification treatments (e.g., with ammonia, morpholine, cyclohexylamine carbamate, or diethyl-zinc) have been proposed and tried, but at best they can only halt the process of embrittlement and cannot reverse it.14 With the move to kraft pulping, alkaline peroxide bleaching, and increasing use of precipitated calcium carbonate as a filler, the high quality papers produced today are intrinsically acid free and should also resist subsequent acidification by S02-polluted air fairly well. [Pg.200]

Filtration is the most straightforward, probably the oldest form of sugar liquor clarification process. Filtration is effected with plate and frame pressure-filters or some type of leaf pressure-filter such as Sweetland filters with stationary suspended circular leaves covered on both sides with filter cloth. A filter aid of some sort (diatomaceous earth, paper pulp, or kieselghur) is essential to the operation. The precipitated calcium carbonate serves as a filter aid in the carbonation process. The liquor is mixed with the filter aid and forced under pump pressure through the fabric, which retains the cake and allows the clear liquor to flow through. The retained sugar in the cake can be washed out with hot water. Filtration is no longer used as the sole means of clarification. The process is used for further clarification of the liquor from a carbonation or phosphatation process. [Pg.182]

The principal components of ash are calcium carbonate— in the form of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) or ground calcium carbonate (GCC)—that typically constitutes 20% and up to 75% of dry sludge content, and clay. These two minerals are typically loaded into paper as a coating and filler to improve the mechanical characteristics as well as the appearance of paper. The resulting papermaking sludge, particularly mixed office paper sludge, consists primarily of two major components, that is, fiber and minerals finely mixed with each other. [Pg.111]
