Precautions flammable chemicals

Train staff in hazards and precautions, and practise emergency evacuation drills Remember that flammable chemicals can also be toxic or asphyxiant... [Pg.192]

D espite many safety precautions within chemical plants, equipment failures or operator errors can cause increases in process pressures beyond safe levels. If pressures rise too high, they may exceed the maximum strength of pipelines and vessels. This can result in rupturing of process equipment, causing major releases of toxic or flammable chemicals. [Pg.353]

Mercaptans are flammable. Normal precautions used in handling any flammable chemical are applicable. Flares used to burn vapors to reduce pressure on a storage tank should be situated as far away from the general storage area as practical. The flare should have a suitable flame arrestor. All potential sources of fire, flame, and sparks in the immediate area should be sought out and eliminated. [Pg.3096]

When all the CaO has been added, the stirring is continued at a more leisurely pace for another three hours. This long stretch of stirring is bound to tire even the most dedicated explosive manufacturer so an alternative which can be used where electricity is available is to suspend an electric drill or similar motor over the pail, and use a clean paint stirrer attachment to stir the solution. The fumes are not especially flammable, so fires are not the hazard they often are when dealing with more flammable chemicals. Even so, rigging an extra long stem for the stirrer, so the motor is elevated above the pail rim, is a wise precaution. [Pg.94]

Flammable chemicals should be stored in appropriate containers and facilities. Smaller amounts may be stored in laboratories in appropriate cabinets. A 10% neutral buffered formalin solution, commonly known as formaldehyde, is potentially carcinogenic. In 1987, precautions for laboratory workers were put in place as the Formaldehyde Standard CFR 1919.1048. Xylene is potentially hazardous and should be handled appropriately, see OSHA, 29 CFR 1910.1450. An excellent website is available for on fine location of Material... [Pg.201]

Risk is the probability of suffering harm from being exposed to an unsafe situation or a hazardous material. Risk can almost always be reduced to acceptable levels if the nature of the risk is recognized and understood since preventive measures can be implemented. For example, in the laboratory we are able to use a flammable chemical such as acetone because we can take precautions to prevent a Are by keeping the flammable material away from ignition sources and using ventilation to remove vapors so that flammable air concentrations do not form. [Pg.354]
