Pre-anaesthetic

CifiHijClNj. White plates m.p. 125 C. Diazepam is one of several benzodiazepines which are very widely used as minor tranquillizers for allaying anxiety, as hypnotics or, in sufficiently high dosage given intravenously, as pre-anaesthetic sedatives. [Pg.132]

Pre-anaesthetic medication These agents reduce the salivary and respiratory secretion and are administered half an hour before general anaesthesia. They also prevent laryngospasm. Atropine is given in combination with morphine as a preanaesthetic medication to antagonize the central depressant action of morphine on respiration. [Pg.164]

Examples of preservatives are phenylmercuric nitrate or acetate (0.002% w/v), chlorhexidine acetate (0.01 % w/v), thiomersal (0.01 % w/v) and benzalkorrium chloride (0.01 % w/v). Chlorocresol is too toxic to the comeal epithehum, but 8-hydroxyquinoline and thiomersal may be used in specific instances. The principal considerahon in relation to antimicrobial properties is the activity of the bactericide against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a major source of serious nosocomial eye infections. Although benzal-konium chloride is probably the most active of the recommended preservatives, it cannot always be used because of its incompatibility with many compounds commonly used to treat eye diseases, nor should it be used to preserve eye-drops containing anaesthetics. Since benzalkonium chloride reacts with natural mbber, silicone or butyl rabber teats should be substituted. Since silicone mbber is permeable to water vapour, products should not be stored for more than 3 months after manufacture. As with all mbber components, the mbber teat should be pre-equilibrated with the preservative prior to... [Pg.417]

Perphenazine is now only available in oral formulation. It is used less and less in anaesthetic practice, usually given with premedication (2-4 mg, 1-2 h pre-operatively). The anti-emetic effects are well recognised but there may be marked sedation. It has a role in anxiety states and in the management of psychiatric cases. [Pg.194]

Albino rats of the CF strain were kept on a diet containing 4% salt (sodium chloride) for 7 days. They were anaesthetized and fixed on a stereotaxic table. A glass coated silver microelectrode (tip 3.5 pm in diam, resistance 1.5 - 2.5 MG) was inserted into the lateral hypothalamic area and connected through a head-stage, a pre-amplifier and a filter to an oscilloscope. After recording the neuronal activity by a two-channel recorder for 5 min, Natrum mur 30 (Natrum muriaticum 30) and Natrum... [Pg.27]

Use in pregnancy. Ketamine is contraindicated in pregnancy before term, since it has oxytocic activity. It is also contraindicated in patients with eclampsia or pre-eclampsia. It may be used for assisted vaginal delivery by an experienced anaesthetist. Ketamine is better suited for use during caesarean section it causes less fetal and neonatal depression than other anaesthetics. [Pg.354]

EMLA (eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics a combination of two local anaesthetics, lidocaine and prilocaine in a cream) is capable of producing skin thickness analgesia from topical administration. The cream is applied for a period of 1-2 hours under an occlusive dressing. EMLA is indicated prior to venepuncture (particularly in children) and whenever pre-injection analgesia of the skin is required. [Pg.236]

Inhalation anaesthetics may impair the efficacy of anticholinesterases in reversing neuromuscular blockade. Propofol does not affect the reversal of rocuronium block by neostigmine. Physostigmine pre-treatment increased propofol requirements by 20% in one study. [Pg.93]

A placebo-controlled study in healthy subjects found that pre-treatment with topiramate 50 mg did not affect the reaction time after sub-anaesthetic doses of ketamine (slow intravenous injection of 120 micrograms/kg followed by 500 micrograms/kg over one hour)9... [Pg.106]

In all these conditions the final diagnosis is usually made by histology, most conunonly following suction biopsy via the rectum. This technique is fast and simple and can be carried out in neonates without a general anaesthetic. In some cases full thickness biopsy will be required to obtain all layers of the intestinal wall, in which case a general anaesthetic is required. Complex enzyme histochemistry and inunune histochemistry is frequently necessary. If contrast enema is required it should be performed pre-biopsy or at least 24 h post biopsy. [Pg.207]

Anaesthetize the animals and take a blood sample from the tail vein (mice) or jugular (rats) into a capped 0.5 ml or 1.5 ml microcentrifuge tube to act as a pre-immune sample. Allow to clot, centrifuge (1500 g), remove serum, and store at -20°C. [Pg.8]

Anaesthetize rats, bleed from the jugular (pre-immune control), and then open the abdomen along the central line. [Pg.8]

The simplest method to transfer molecules as neutrals into the gas phase is by thermal heating. Here, a temperature-controlled oven is located either before or after the nozzle in the pre-expansion region. This method has been used for a limited number of small biomolecules including some nucleobases [12—15], amino acids [1-5], anaesthetics [16-23] and several neurotransmitters [24-26]. However, this method often requires very high temperatures to achieve significant vapour pressures, resulting in impractical experimental conditions and unacceptable high levels of thermal decomposition. [Pg.3]
