Plastic materials represent less than 10% by weight of all packagiag materials. They have a value of over 7 biUion including composite flexible packagiag about half is for film and half for botties, jars, cups, tubs, and trays. The principal materials used are high density polyethylene (HDPE) for botties, low density polyethylene for film, polypropylene (PP) for film, and polyester for both botties and films. Plastic resias are manufactured by petrochemical companies, eg. Union Carbide and Mobil Chemical for low density polyethylene (LDPE), Solvay for high density polyethylene, Himont for polypropylene, and Shell and Eastman for polyester. [Pg.451]

PPS resins must compete with PEI and phenoHcs. There are two domestic manufacturers of poly(phenylene sulfide) Phillips and Fortron Industries. Worldwide there is currently large overcapacity (Table 15). Four Japanese companies, ie, Toso Susteel, a joint venture of Toso/Hodogaya Chemical Toray Toprene, a joint venture of Toto Kasei/Toren Petrochemical and Kureha Chemical have a combined capacity of 82,500 t. U.S. agents sell their materials in the U.S. markets General Electric sells for Toso Susteel Soltex Polymer, part of Solvay, Belgium, sells for Toprene Hoechst-Celanese sells for Kureha. Prices for PPS resins and compounds range from 8.80/kg for unreinforced resin to 3.30/kg for 65% filled resins. [Pg.274]

It is worth noting that the method used by Vergnes et al. in experimentally obtaining the relative viscosity equation parameters, a and ft in Eq. 10.3-6. They worked with two almost identical PP homopolymers, one in 4-mm mean pellet diameter form, and the other in the form of small, 750-pm-diameter beads (Solvay Eltex HL 101). A 21-mm Co-TSE was fitted with a rheometric slit of length L = 52 mm, width w = 28 mm, and an adjustable gap spacing 1.5 < h < 2.5 mm. The polypropylene in pellet form was fed at the feed throat and melted. Just before the die, a second feed port introduced the PP in bead form at various rates, resulting in different effective values. Two pressure transducers at the die were used to record the slit pressure drop AP(relative viscosity was then expressed as... [Pg.582]

Following the war, Solvay expanded its output in its European factories and built new ones in Italy, Greece, and other countries. It maintained ties with all its earlier allies except, of course, with Russia, where its properties had been confiscated. Before World War I, however, it had done little to commercialize new chemicals through process technologies, as Dow had done in the United States. But it did move into polymer/petrochemicals quickly after World War II. In 1949 Solvay initiated the production of polyvinyl chloride, becoming a European leader in that basic polymer commodity. The company then entered into the production of HDPB in 1959 and PP in 1966. Shortly thereafter, it began to produce a variety of end-products in the manner of the American companies for use in both consumer and industrial chemical lines. In 1974 Solvay returned to the U.S. markets, setting up headquarters in Deer Park, Texas. By that time its soda ash and caustic soda processes had become obsolete.3 ... [Pg.136]

Polypropylene (PP500P, SABIC) has melt flow rate of 3.1 (2.16 kg at 230 °C) and density of 905 kg/m3 was used as matrix resin. Nano-sized synthetic ultrafine surface treated precipitated calcium carbonate (Socal 312, Solvay, France) with mean particle diameter of 70 nm used as filler phase. PP-g-MAH compatibiliser (Priex 20097, Solvay, France) with a maleic anhydride content of 0.05 wt % and MFI of 15 (2.16 kg at 230 °C) was employed to promote the interfacial interaction between nano-CaC03 and PP, and to extend the dispersion of nanoparticles in polymer matrix. Compounds used as processing materials are listed in the table 1. [Pg.358]

The wood flour pjartides of 425 microns (40-mesh) in size were kindly donated by American Wood fibers (Schofield, WI) and are constituted predominantly with p>onderosa pine, maple, oak, spruce, southern yellow pine, cedar. The wood was oven dried at 100°C for 24 h before processing to remove moisture. The isotactic polypropylene matrix (PP) has a density of 0.9 g/cm and a melt flow index of 2.5 g/10 min, it was provided by Solvay Co. Polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (MAPP) with an approximate maleic anhydride (MA) content of 3 wt. % was purchased from Aldrich Chemical Company, Inc. (Milwaukee, WI). All ingredients were used as received. [Pg.417]
