Amines are powerful nucleophiles which react under neutral or slightly basic conditions with several electron-accepting carbon reagents. The reaction of alkyl halides with amines is useful for the preparation of tertiary amines or quaternary ammonium salts. The conversion of primary amines into secondary amines is usually not feasible since the secondary amine tends towards further alkylation. [Pg.290]

Combinatorial. Combinatorial methods express the synthesis problem as a traditional optimization problem which can only be solved using powerful techniques that have been known for some time. These may use total network cost direcdy as an objective function but do not exploit the special characteristics of heat-exchange networks in obtaining a solution. Much of the early work in heat-exchange network synthesis was based on exhaustive search or combinatorial development of networks. The remaining class depicted in Figure 2 is that of soHd-state devices, ie, transistors, various types of semiconductor diode amplifiers, etc. At frequencies below 1 GHz, generation of hundreds or even at the lower frequencies, kilowatts, is feasible by soHd state. The physical form of the thermocouples varies significantly according to appHcations. Most spacecraft power suppHes utilize separate thermocouples that can be checked for performance at successive stages of manufacturing and be replaced if necessary. This approach fits in very well with the extremely high rehabihty requirements imposed on such systems. In general, the tendency has been to locate the power-recoveiy driver and its driven unit where dictated by the driven-unit requirement and pipe the power-recoveiy fluid to and away from the driver. In recent years there has been some substitution of TDI by MDI derivatives. One-shot polyether processes became feasible with the advent of sufficiently powerful catalysts. For many years tertiary amines had been used with both polyesters and the newer polyethers. Examples included alkyl morpholines and triethylamine. Since power is a substantial component of the fixed operating cost of a unit, the operating cost would run approximately seven times more on a scrubber installation. The installation costs of a hot-rolled steel precipitator to handle 100,000 cfm would be between 3.50 and 4.50/cfm as opposed to 1.40 to 1.80/cfm for a venturi scrubbing system. Enantioselective processes involving chiral catalysts or reagents can provide sufficient spatial bias and transition state organization to obviate the need for control by substrate stereochemistry. Since such reactions do not require substrate spatial control, the corresponding transforms are easier to apply antithetically. The stereochemical information in the retron is used to determine which of the enantiomeric catalysts or reagents are appropriate and the transform is finally evaluated for chemical feasibility. Of course, such transforms are powerful because of their predictability and effectiveness in removing stereocenters from a target. [Pg.51]
