Power density improvements

This coincides with ongoing research to increase power density, improve water management, operate at ambient conditions, tolerate reformed fuel, and extend stack life. In the descriptions that follow, Ballard Power Systems fuel cells are considered representative of the state-of-the-art. [Pg.81]

The membranes used in the present cells are expensive and available only in limited ranges of thickness and specific ionic conductivity. There is a need to lower the cost of the present membranes and to investigate lower cost membranes that exhibit low resistivity. This is particularly important for transportation applications where high current density operation is needed. Cheaper membranes promote lower cost PEFCs and thinner membranes with lower resistivities could contribute to power density improvement (29). It is estimated that the cost of current membranes could fall (by one order of magnitude) if the market increased significantly (by two orders of magnitude) (22). [Pg.84]

Flead and Silva used occupation numbers obtained from a periodic FIF density matrix for the substrate to define localized orbitals in the chemisorption region, which then defines a cluster subspace on which to carry out FIF calculations [181]. Contributions from the surroundings also only come from the bare slab, as in the Green s matrix approach. Increases in computational power and improvements in minimization teclmiques have made it easier to obtain the electronic properties of adsorbates by supercell slab teclmiques, leading to the Green s fiinction methods becommg less popular [182]. [Pg.2226]

Ozone Generator Design. A better understanding of discharge physics and the chemistry of ozone formation has led to improvements in power density, efficiency, and ozone concentration, initiating a trend toward downsizing. [Pg.499]

Surface analysis by non-resonant (NR-) laser-SNMS [3.102-3.106] has been used to improve ionization efficiency while retaining the advantages of probing the neutral component. In NR-laser-SNMS, an intense laser beam is used to ionize, non-selec-tively, all atoms and molecules within the volume intersected by the laser beam (Eig. 3.40b). With sufficient laser power density it is possible to saturate the ionization process. Eor NR-laser-SNMS adequate power densities are typically achieved in a small volume only at the focus of the laser beam. This limits sensitivity and leads to problems with quantification, because of the differences between the effective ionization volumes of different elements. The non-resonant post-ionization technique provides rapid, multi-element, and molecular survey measurements with significantly improved ionization efficiency over SIMS, although it still suffers from isoba-ric interferences. [Pg.132]

If fuel cells could be used in transportation vehicles, it could have a major impact on worldwide consumption of petroleum. Major improvements that are needed for this to happen include increasing the efficiency of fuel cells, increasing their power density, reducing their manufacturing cost, and developing fuel cell designs capable of rapid start-up. [Pg.174]

The internal reforming of CH4 by CQzin SOFC system was performed over an ESC (electrolyte st rported cell) prepared with Ni based anode catalysts. Figure 5 diows the performance of voltage and power density with current density over various ESC (Ni based anodes I YSZ (LaSr)Mn03) at SOOC when CH4 and CO2 were used as reactants. To improve the contact between single cell and collector, different types of SOFC reactor were used [5]. In the optimized reactor (C), it was found fliat die opai-... [Pg.619]

There is no question that the development and commercialization of lithium ion batteries in recent years is one of the most important successes of modem electrochemistiy. Recent commercial systems for power sources show high energy density, improved rate capabilities and extended cycle life. The major components in most of the commercial Li-ion batteries are graphite electrodes, LiCo02 cathodes and electrolyte solutions based on mixtures of alkyl carbonate solvents, and LiPF6 as the salt.1 The electrodes for these batteries always have a composite structure that includes a metallic current collector (usually copper or aluminum foil/grid for the anode and cathode, respectively), the active mass comprises micrometric size particles and a polymeric binder. [Pg.216]
