This principle is applied not only to the PVA-PVAc composites but to other polymer composites. The composite structure does not always need to be porous but may be powders and gels designed for the wettability by solvents and the extension of the surface area in soluble polymers. Materials Characterization. Regarding education in the characterization or analysis of materials—a central topic of materials chemistry—there is a similar hierarchy of importance of subjects that chemistry students (and faculty) will need to have learned. Reference 7 treats this topic systematically, and Roy and Newnham (11) presented a comprehensive (albeit somewhat outdated) presentation of the architecture of materials characterization. Thus Rutherford backscattering and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) are excellent characterization research tools, but in the sequence of tools used every day on every sample, they are insignificant. As the range of components available for use in the azoic dyeing process expanded, research was simultaneously targeted on improvements designed to make the process more attractive to the commercial dyer. The necessity for the dyer to diazotise the Fast Base was removed with the introduction of stabilised diazonium salts [111], known as Fast Salts. Stabilisation was achieved by a judicious selection of the counter-ion to the diazonium cation various anions have found use in commercial Fast Salts and some examples are listed in Table 4-4. Particularly effective is the diazonium tetrachlorozincate, which can be readily prepared by adding an excess of zinc chloride solution to a solution of the diazonium salt. The precipitated complex diazonium salt is usually admixed with an inert diluent, which enhances its stability, and in use the dyer only needs to dissolve the powder in water to prepare the necessary diazonium salt solution. [Pg.223]

A fuse containing a core of black powder is an example of a delay. The driving force behind the rapid development of powder diffraction methods over the past 10 years is the increasing need for structural characterization of materials that are only available as powders. Examples are zeolite catalysts, magnets, metal hydrides, ceramics, battery and fuel cell electrodes, piezo- and ferroelectrics, and more recently pharmaceuticals and organic and molecular materials as well as biominerals. The emergence of nanoscience as an interdisciplinary research area will further increase the need for powder diffraction, pair-distribution function (PDF) analysis of powder diffraction pattern allows the refinement of structural models regardless of the crystalline quality of the sample and is therefore a very powerful structural characterization tool for nanomaterials and disordered complex materials. [Pg.4511]
