Powder coatings industrial applications

The use of fine powders for industrial applications has become an increasingly important factor in aerosol technology. Finely divided powders now are used for the reinforcement of materials, surface coatings, and laminated, polycomponent materials. 

Besides its usage in foods, indene polymer is used in the coatings industry, inks, floorings and in rubber applications. Some use has been made of the nitrated polymer as an ingredient in fuze powder (substituting for charcoal), but because of the sensy to impact this use is discontinued (Ref 3)... 

Tin finds widespread use because of its resistance to corrosion, or as foil or to provide protective coats/plates for other metals. Properties of lead which make industrial application attractive surround its soft, plastic nature permitting it to be rolled into sheets or extruded through dies. In the finely-divided state lead powder is pyrophoric in bulk form the rapidly-formed protective oxide layer inhibits further reaction. It dissolves slowly in mineral acids. Industrial uses include roofing material, piping, and vessel linings, e.g. for acid storage. 

The effect of environmental concerns on future developments in the paint industry is discussed. Particular attention is paid to volatile organic compound regulations, developments in powder coatings, and radiation-curable coatings. Tabulated information is presented on applications, backbone type and typical mechanical properties of Incorez W830 series PU dispersions and Incorez W2000 series uiethane/aciylic hybrids. 10 refs. These subgel prepolymers have been manufactured by industry for some time and used in two-component adhesives or coating materials. For one-component materials, storage below the actual Tg, whenever applicable, is the most efficient method for blocking the reactivities. This kind of blocking is used in powder coatings. 

Having sold all these base chemicals - most of them at peak value - UCB focused on innovative specialty resins such as UV cure resins, powder coating resins, and high-solid resins for automotive, graphic arts, and industrial applications. At the end of 2004, just before the closure of the sale to Cytec and two years after the acquisition of the Solutia activities, UCB s chemicals activity had a turnover of EUR 1.1 billion, around 40 percent of which was outside Europe, an EBITDA of EUR 147 million, and a leading position in most of its markets. 

Other industrial applications still exist, but the use of dispersions is cleaner and more convenient. Burnishing of molybdenum disulphide films applied by means of dispersions can be carried out in exactly the same way as for free powder, and the resulting burnished coatings have similar properties, but there are no detailed reports about them other than those of Matsunaga described in Chapter 6. Films from dispersions will also be burnished in use by the effects of sliding under contact load, and their eventual form and behaviour are likely to be similar in all respects to those produced from loose powder. Similar burnished films are likely to be the end-product of many of the softer bonded coatings, and these will be discussed further in Chapter 11.
