Properties. Table 1 hsts many of the physical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of indium. The highly plastic nature of indium, which is its most notable feature, results from deformation from mechanical twinning. Indium retains this plasticity at cryogenic temperatures. Indium does not work-harden, can endure considerable deformation through compression, cold-welds easily, and has a distinctive cry on bending as does tin. [Pg.79]

Romanchenko and Stepanov (1981) recognized that the impulse imparted at the spall plane to material downstream, because of the elastic-plastic nature of this material, led to an attenuating tensile stress pulse propagating toward the sample-window interface as is illustrated in Fig. 8.9. Thus, the maximum tension inferred from the measured spall signal should be adjusted for this attenuation in estimating a material spall strength at the spall plane. [Pg.276]

Tin finds widespread use because of its resistance to corrosion, or as foil or to provide protective coats/plates for other metals. Properties of lead which make industrial application attractive surround its soft, plastic nature permitting it to be rolled into sheets or extruded through dies. In the finely-divided state lead powder is pyrophoric in bulk form the rapidly-formed protective oxide layer inhibits further reaction. It dissolves slowly in mineral acids. Industrial uses include roofing material, piping, and vessel linings, e.g. for acid storage. [Pg.30]

Cations can be seen as acting as ionic crosslinks between polyanion chains. Although this may appear a naive concept, crosslinking can be seen as equivalent to attractions between polyions resulting from the fluctuation of the counterion distribution (Section 4.2.13). Moreover, it relates to the classical theory of gelation associated with Flory (1953). Divalent cations (Zn and Ca +) have the potential to link two polyanion chains. Of course, unlike covalent crosslinks, ionic links are easily broken and re-formed under stress there could therefore be chain slipping and this may explain the plastic nature of zinc polycarboxylate cement. [Pg.101]

For some applications, a combination of materials may be required to achieve a composite with the desired properties and performance. Property-improved lignocellulosic fibers can be combined with materials such as metal, glass, plastic, natural polymers, and synthetic fiber to yield a new generation of composite materials. New composites will be developed that utilize the unique properties obtainable by combining many different materials. This trend will increase significantly in the future. [Pg.256]

Vulcanisation of rubbers can be carried out as a separate process after shaping. Shaping can take place at relatively low temperatures since the unvulcanised rubber has an outspoken plastic nature. It is still solid enough to be transferred from the mould to a separate vulcanisation chamber, in which, at a much higher temperature, e.g. by steam, the vulcanisation is achieved. [Pg.204]

Errors are a result of the elastic and plastic nature of the ceramic particles themselves. Several other authors [81,82] have calculated the pressure distribution in cylindrical dies and other forms using finite element numerical methods. Bortzmeyer [81] has incorporated cohesion, elastic, and plastic deformation of the particles into finite element calculations for more complicated geometries, as shown in... [Pg.665]

Plastic solids derive their functionality from their unique plastic nature. Three conditions are essential for plasticity (5) (1) both liquid and solid phases must be present (2) the solid phase must be so finely dispersed that the entire solid-liquid matrix can be effectively bound together by internal cohesive forces and (3) proper proportions must exist between the phases. Incorrect phase ratios adversely influence product rheology. For example, deficient solids content may result in oil separation, whereas excessive solids can cause hardness or brittleness instead of the desired viscous flow. [Pg.2067]

A first stage in the analysis consisted in determining the elastic or plastic nature of the contact loading using the known yield properties of the bulk DGEBA/IPD system. The latter were established experimentally assuming that they obey a modified Von Mises criterion taking into account the effect of the hydrostatic pressure. This criterion may be written as ... [Pg.54]

The bulk of the fertilizer market demand is for the two Coarse grades, necessitating some compaction of the finer grades to produce these. Passage of the finer Standard and Soluble grades of material through closely spaced steel rollers under pressure forms a fused sheet of potassium chloride, because of the plastic nature of this salt. This fused sheet is then broken up and rescreened to raise the proportion of Granular and Coarse products produced. [Pg.190]
