Potting compost

The coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) is grown throughout the tropical world, for decoration as well as for its many culinary and non-culinary uses virtually every part of the coconut palm has some human use. Coir (the fibre from the husk of the coconut) is used in ropes, rugs and mats, brushes and as stuffing fibre. It is also used extensively in horticulture for making potting compost. 

Nutrients contained in the seeds of trees may be entirely sufficient for their germination and the early growth of seedlings. Design an experiment to test the hypothesis that the nutrient content of the growing medium (John Innes potting compost) will not affect ... 

John Innes No.l potting compost contains fertiliser at 3 g per litre and chalk at 0.5 g per litre. 

In some situations, foliar treatments can be avoided by using a prophylactic soil-applied pesticide. Treatment of potted plants, especially ornamentals, may be by an admixture of granules to the potting compost, by dipping the roots into a slurry of pesticide at planting, or by a subsequent drench. However, all these treatments have a limited persistence, and are only aimed at protection during the first two to six weeks of plant development. 

Besides mulch films, other potential agricultural applications for biodegradable polymers include devices for the controlled release of agrochemicals (such as fertilisers, soil applied active ingredients, insect pheromones and so on), disposable articles such as plant pots, composting containers and bags, envelopes of ensilage, seed trays and so on.

Apply as a topdressing for patio pots or house plants—if necessary, remove the top 1 in (2 cm) of the potting mix, and replace with worm compost Water as usual. 

Tiny biack fruit files may appear in a worm bin, especially in summer. They are not a health hazard, but can be annoying. Burying waste as you add it may cut down their numbers. Alternatively, they can be caught in a trap an open jar of orange juice, wine, or vinegar works well, or you can buy lobster-pot-style flytraps. Never use pesticides on a worm compost bin. 

A soilless potting mix is best as it reduces the weight of the basket. Improve water retention by adding an organic moisture-retainer, based on coarse seaweed meal. Worm compost (see pp.46-49) added to the mix (up to 25% volume) increases the level of plant foods and improves the water-holding capacity. 

Select a suitable blueberry type for your zone highbush (Zones 4-7), lowbush (Zones 2-6), midhigh (Zones 3-7), or rabbiteye (Zones 7-9). Buy two- or three-year-old container-grown plants that are not rootbound. You will need to test the pH of your potting mix or any compost you use for soil Improvement to be certain that it is not alkaline. Use only rainwater when watering plants. Plant bushes In late fall or early winter, spacing them 5 ft (1.5 m) apart. Mulch with composted bark or pine needles. 

Fertilization experiments were made in Mitscherlich culture vessels and contained about 23 kg of sand and peat compost. There were two plants per pot and they were watered so that water and dissolved... 

Rosemary has very few problems except root rot and powdery mildew. Avoid root rot by being careful not to overwater. When planting in containers, choose a very porous potting mbt. See Leaves yellow plant wilts stems, crowns, or roots water-soaked and rotted on page 117 for additional controls. Powdery mildew can cause fuzzy white growth on leaves and stems. Spray affected plants repeatedly with compost tea for control. 

In the greenhouse, use pots of sprouted wheat to lure fungus gnats from your plants, then hot compost the soil and wheat when the females have laid their eggs in it. Start a new crop of wheat every 2 weeks. 

Psilocybe natalensis, which we first discovered in South Africa in January 1994 (see Chapter 7.6), is another species that easily fruits, within four to eight weeks, on compost or on straw with potting soil for a casing. 

Germinated seeds from the seed compost (no added nutrients) would be transplanted to a similar arrangement of replicated pots, containing at least two levels of nutrients and kept watered with deionised water. You would need to decide how many seedlings...
