Poster presentation examples

Move 1 (Interpret or Explain Results) is often integrated into the poster Results section, thereby becoming a combined Results and Discussion (R D) section. An example of a combined R D section is shown in hgure 9.1. In such posters, interpretative remarks (Discussion) are included right along with the graphics (Results). In this way, space is conserved, and viewers can read and interpret the data simultaneously (usually easier than looking back and forth between the two sections). For instructional purposes, however, we have placed move 1 in the Discussion section, and we use a stand-alone Discussion section in the three hypothetical posters presented below. We follow this approach, in part, to maintain a clear distinction between results (just the facts) and discussion (interpretation of the facts).

In April 1997 I visited Euromat 97, a symposium and exhibition on the latest developments in the field of materials science. During one of the poster presentations, a Japanese scientist presented a new product which he called wood ceramics . These examples serve to illustrate that there are grey areas between the different groups of materials. So obviously an unambiguous definition is no longer possible. 

The topics chosen for the sessions were typically chosen so as to represent problems common to all three fields of application. For example, Micromechanics of Porous Media, Electromechanical Interactions, Chemical and Electroosmosis, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in Porous Media, Dual Porosity. The symposium included 49 oral presentations and a dozen poster presentations. The meeting attracted 60 participants from 15 countries Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States. 

In addition to on-site tasks, the undergraduate researchers also participated in post-experiment activities. These activities included post-appointment presentations to their peers at Cal Poly during student organization meetings, poster presentations at technical conferences, and participation in special events/ contests at technical conferences. For example, undergraduate researchers won awards for their submissions to the media competitions at the 2010 NEES/PEER (see Figure 3) and 2011 NEES/MCEER Quake Summit annual meetings. 

As a second example, we present another poster Methods section (excerpt 9C) based on the same research presented in figure 9.1. Recall that the hypothetical poster in figure 9.1 focuses on methods development the poster in excerpt 9C focuses on methods application. If you examine the Methods sections in the two posters, you will see that figure 9.1 describes how the on-fiber derivatization procedure was optimized excerpt 9G describes how the optimized procedure was used to analyze beer samples. 

As the last example, we present a poster Methods section based on Boesten et al. (2001) concerning the asymmetric Strecker synthesis of an a-amino acid (excerpt 9D and at the end of chapter 2). The poster Methods section presents only...

In general, the objective of a particular investigation of the sort presented in a poster can be expressed in one or two succinct sentences. Again, these can be printed in large type on a sheet of paper. Ideally, and if possible, express this statement as a single question—for example, Given that the 13C-iso-tope effect for nonenzymic decarboxylation of CH CO COOH is 5% (1.05), does decarboxylation, product release, or both limit the rate of pyruvate decarboxylase action with saturating pyruvate at 25 °C and pH 6 ... 

The cardinal rule for effective presentation of experimental data in posters does not really differ from that for preparing slides or overhead transparencies for a talk keep the information per panel to a minimum and make it easy to absorb at a glance. For example, graphical presentation of numerical data is generally more effective than tabulation (be sure the axes are clearly labeled) give structures of compounds rather than names wherever possi-... 

This section is not intended to be a comprehensive review of reaction studies in supercritical water, but to illustrate the special properties of the medium described above and make some further general points by means of examples from the literature. The current position of research on supercritical water reactions and processes can be more comprehensively seen from a collection of abstracts from the 3rd International Symposium on Supercritical Fluids which took place in Strasbourg in October 1994. There were some 10 papers and posters on the subject presented at the Symposium, which are summarised in Tome 3 of the Proceedings, edited by Brunner and Perrut [13]. 

During the past few years interest has grown in the development of standard formats for the machine-readable presentation of chemical structures, and a few proposals have been published. One of these is the Standard Molecular Data (SMD) format, developed by a group of European chemical companies. Under the auspices of the Chemical Structure Association, a series of technical working groups have examined the original version of SMD format and proposed a number of revisions and extensions. This poster paper describes the revised version of the format using annotated examples, and discusses the areas where further extension is required. 

A new class of alkaloids, the OXOCAN were recently discovered in Stephania excentrica, and so far only five examples are described in the literature, all of them from the Menispermaceae. The first alkaloid of this kind, excentricine, was isolated in 1993 fi om Stephania excentrica 71). The second, stephaoxocanine, was isolated in 1996 from Stephania cepharantha (72). The third was preliminarily published as a poster in the 20" Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society of Chemistry (578,579). It was named eletefine and was isolated fi om Cissampelos glaberrima (Figure 6). There has been no presentation, as yet, of their biogenesis.
