Post-industrialism

ICI Polyurethanes and du Vergier are evaluating a PU recycling method. The three-year project aims to use a pilot plant to demonstrate the practicality of the split-phase glycolysis process that ICI has developed. Work will initially focus on flexible foams based on MDI and specially made at Id s Rozenberg plant. In the second phase, the unit will use post-industrial waste. Assuming the trials are successful, a full-scale unit to handle at least 5000 t/y of scrap foam will be built.

Post-industrial waste and sorted post-consumer wastes (PCW) are suitable raw materials. However, they contain different amounts of inhomogeneities formed during the service life and non-polymeric impurities. These contaminants account for differences in mechanical properties and ageing resistance between recyclates and the respective virgin plastics. Recycled plastics are often used in low-grade applications, and it is generally believed that the mechanical performance of recyclates is lower than that of virgin materials. 

Vinyl is recycled by at least 170 recyclers in the United States and Canada. In 1994, about 2.9 x 103 t (6.5 x 106 lb) of post-consumer vinyl were recycled in the United States. An estimated additional 135 x 103 t (300 x 106 lb) of vinyl post-industrial scrap was diverted from landfills and recycled into second-generation products. More than 3500 communities accept vinyl products in their recycling programs, which is about 25% of all communities that recycle. 

Profile material has been successfully subjected to repeated extrusion to investigate the effect of loss of properties and durability when PVC waste is reprocessed. Colour deterioration was the main issue (indicating a need for a virgin cap material to retain colour, if necessary) (211). Fence posts based on a core of recycled PVC, enclosed in a virgin cap skin, have been developed. At present, this depends on post industrial waste, such as off-cuts and off specification profile materials as the source (99). Arecycling project, for vinyl sidings in the USA, has also been conducted (397) (www.vinylinfo.org). 

A project is underway in the UK looking at recycling of post industrial use material.

Class 1 materials remaining from production by the manufacturing or converting industry where their history is well known. These materials typically are always under the control of the processor. Provided that good manufacturing practice is followed and contamination can be excluded, this material is as suitable for direct contact with foodstuffs as new material. Class 1 material can be defined as post-industrial recycled polymers and corresponds to US FDA s primary recycling (pre-consumer scrap).

A twin-chamber Thermofuel plant at the Total Company in Yamanashi Province has been in operation since 2002. The plant at this site processes post-industrial plastic packaging film based mainly on polyethylene, polypropylene and nylon. The plant operation is highly automated. 

An example from a slowly-accumulating (0.01-0.1 cmyr ) sediment profile in a freshwater lake in Scotland (Williams, 1992) should suffice to illustrate the formation of diagenetic metal profiles. Early diagenetic processes, such as those described before, have promoted extensive metal enrichment immediately beneath the water-sediment interface. The oxic conditions, near the water-sediment interface, that promote metal precipitation and enrichment (Mn, Fe, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni) are entirely confined to strata of post-industrial age (Williams, 1992).

The four principles, taken together as a framework, support the implementation of a sustainability post-industrial age. Chemical engineering, as a profession, is a product of the industrial age, but has the discipline and the skill sets to lead the sustainable post-industrial age. The four principles of Natural Capitalism, along with the other tools available, can, over time, continue to support the increase in the standard of living that the chemical industry has provided without the strain on air and watersheds and the impact to human health resulting from accidental exposure. 

The chemical industry can be one of the leaders of the sustainable post-industrial age if the following challenge issued from The Institution of Chemical Engineers, IChemE (Melbourne Communique, 2001) is met.

Everyone agrees that in the next few years a new era will begin — some call it a post-industrial, post-information age. From a hundred-year era, to 25 years, to less than 15 years, the whirlwind tightens with each turn. 

These use post-industrial waste (PIW) and some post-consumer waste (PCW) in their middle plies. They can be faced with better quality facing materials and may or may not have a quality backing used for low-grade small boxes and cartons.
