This latter model is an idealised organisation that is perceived by us to be flexible, and with potential to meet current needs as well as to adjust to those of tomorrow. This model will be discussed in more detail in the final section. This model is not only most appropriate for study of organic farming and food systems, but also relevant to more general application across the specialties of the post-modern university. [Pg.397]

The homes of the rich and famous rest in Manhattan s Upper East Side. Wander the streets east of Central Park, and there s no telling who you ll run into. A number of New York s finest museums run along 5th Avenue, including the grand Metropolitan Museum of Art and the post-modern Guggenheim. Other often-overlooked museums such as the International Center of Photography and the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design are also worth a visit. [Pg.48]

Cut off from the main University of Minnesota campus by the Mississippi River, Minneapolis West Bank could just as easily be called its Left Bank. Alternative theaters, bookstores and music venues are a dime a dozen on the post-modern, graffiti-lined Cedar Avenue strip. [Pg.136]

In a characteristically provocative article Muir Gray (Gray, 1999) describes the features of what he calls post-modern medicine - a distrust of science, a readiness to resort to litigation, a greater attention to risk and better access to information (of whatever quality). He also points out, as indeed have many commentators, how consumer and patient values have already replaced paternalistic and professional values, and where doctors used to lead, they now follow. The monolithic role of the doctor has been challenged by lay experts, whose ability to influence public debate and policy increases just as that of the doctor or scientist diminishes - the lay expert may be the survivor of a disaster or the sufferer from a disease (Bury, 1998). The Gulf War veteran may fulfil both roles. [Pg.368]

Yet White Noise divided critics and reviewers. Some saw it as a straightforward critique of the American way of life a liberal attitude that infuriated conservative commentators. For others, it was almost a celebration of that same post-modern perspective, in which high art is mixed with consumer culture and the philosophy of Nietzsche is no more or less valid than the philosophy of the breakfast-cereal packet. DeLillo has been read both as a denouncer and as a defender of post-modem culture , says Mark Osteen (2000), who feels that neither interpretation really fits White Noise. [Pg.103]

Thus, whilst government and industry support high technologies, the consumer questions the underlying need for them. But if, contrary to the assumption that post-modern consumer society implies a transition from constraining norms to a situation in which individuals are free to select an identity through product choice and purchase, consumers are in actuality, despite the proliferation of niche markets, embedded in both historical and social relationships. This is not least because the invisible hand of the market place also socializes consumer perceptions, so the post-modern consumer may be an optimistic construct (Clarke, 1998 Scholderer et al., 2002). [Pg.90]

We are now living in the Information Age, according to many of today s pundits and commentators. This followed naturally from the Computer Age, which obviously followed the Post Modern Industrial Age, which followed the Industrial Revolution Age, and so forth and so on, all the way back through the thousands of years to the Stone Age, where adhesives were first used. Quite frankly, we are not entirely convinced there has been a lot of progress. [Pg.22]

As the thriving development of construction of new countryside, the dramatic changing looks of urban and rural areas shows its great progress, but the disclosure of urban-rural problem is stiU common. Although the humanism-focused post-modernity era comes after Industrial Revolution in design field, the present urban and rural landscape of our country still cannot help people to find the spirit support like the homeland . It not only shows people s concern on their living environment, but also reflects the call of the society to subjectivity and the wake of humanism spirit. The research of culture landscape system cannot separate from the materiality, technicality and utility of urban-rural development, however, it possesses the criteria of humanism and becomes the bond of man and nature, and thus it is helpful to the wake of humanism spirit. [Pg.140]

Before I elaborate, let me say that what we are encountering here is a widely touted post-modern view of science. Its proponents hope that you will accord it the dubious compliment of finding it scientific. I decline. However, a wrecker s ball should not be taken lightly. [Pg.360]

Of course, we make mistakes. When we distinguish truth from falsehood we do so fallibly. This is important, and it is part of the post-modern thesis. The truth of science, we have already noted, is not guaranteed by logic. It is fallible. Put differently, seeing requires an instrument, which is a pair of eyes. But it requires more than a pair of eyes, and yet, we do see. This is why, in addition to the word see, we... [Pg.360]

Greek drama did this for us. All Western culture and religion have been founded on this inheritance [...] We have exhausted it. Our dramas - our culture, our politics - are dead. Post-mortem not post-modern. If we do not create a new drama that looks at the profoundest human paradoxes we will destroy ourselves. [Pg.168]
