The improved notched impact strength obtained in a 5%, 5000/5000, PSF/PSX block copolymer blend is achieved with minimal sacrifice in polysulfone properties. The data in Table VII indicate that heat distortion temperature is reduced by only 5°C. The aromatic sulfone polymers are a group of high performance plastics, many of which have relatively closely related stmctures and similar properties (see Polymers containing sulfur, polysulfones). Chemically, all are polyethersulfones, ie, they have both aryl ether (ArOAr) and aryl sulfone (ArS02Ar) linkages in the polymer backbone. The simplest polyethersulfone (5) consists of aromatic rings linked alternately by ether and sulfone groups. [Pg.331]

A polysulfone is characterized by the presence of the sulfone group as part of its repeating unit. Polysulfones may be aUphatic or aromatic. AUphatic polysulfones (R and are alkyl groups) were synthesized by radical-induced copolymerization of olefins and sulfur dioxide and characterized many years ago. However, they never demonstrated significant practical utiUty due to their relatively unattractive physical properties, not withstanding the low cost of their raw materials (1,2). The polysulfones discussed in this article are those based on an aromatic backbone stmcture. The term polysulfones is used almost exclusively to denote aromatic polysulfones. [Pg.460]

The effect of temperature on PSF tensile stress—strain behavior is depicted in Figure 4. The resin continues to exhibit useful mechanical properties at temperatures up to 160°C under prolonged or repeated thermal exposure. PES and PPSF extend this temperature limit to about 180°C. Electrical Properties. Polysulfones offer excellent electrical insulative capabiUties and other electrical properties as can be seen from the data in Table 7. The resins exhibit low dielectric constants and dissipation factors even in the GH2 (microwave) frequency range. This performance is retained over a wide temperature range and has permitted appHcations such as printed wiring board substrates, electronic connectors, lighting sockets, business machine components, and automotive fuse housings, to name a few. The desirable electrical properties along with the inherent flame retardancy of polysulfones make these polymers prime candidates in many high temperature electrical and electronic appHcations. [Pg.467]

For reasons that are not fiiUy understood, PPSF exhibits generally improved compatibiUty characteristics over either PSF or PES in a number of systems. An example of this is blends of PPSF with polyaryletherketones (39,40). These blends form extremely finely dispersed systems with synergistic strength, impact, and environmental stress cracking resistance properties. Blends of PPSF with either PSF or PES are synergistic in the sense that they exhibit the super-toughness characteristic of PPSF at PSF or PES contents of up to 35 wt % (33,34). The miscibility of PPSF with a special class of polyimides has been discovered and documented (41). The miscibility profile of PPSF with high temperature (T > 230° C) polysulfones has been reported (42). [Pg.469]

Polysulfones also offer desirable properties for cookware appHcations, eg, microwave transparency and environmental resistance to most common detergents. Resistance to various sterilizing media (eg, steam, disinfectants, and gamma radiation) makes polysulfones the resin family of choice for many medical devices. Uses in the electrical and electronic industry include printed circuit boards, circuit breaker components, connectors, sockets, and business machine parts, to mention a few. The good clarity of PSF makes it attractive for food service and food processing uses. An excellent review of composite RO and nanofiltration (NE) membranes is available (8). These thin-fHm, composite membranes consist of a thin polymer barrier layer formed on one or more porous support layers, which is almost always a different polymer from the surface layer. The surface layer determines the flux and separation characteristics of the membrane. The porous backing serves only as a support for the barrier layer and so has almost no effect on membrane transport properties. The barrier layer is extremely thin, thus allowing high water fluxes. The most important thin-fHm composite membranes are made by interfacial polymerization, a process in which a highly porous membrane, usually polysulfone, is coated with an aqueous solution of a polymer or monomer and then reacts with a cross-linking agent in a water-kniniscible solvent. [Pg.144]

There has been considerable research on chlorine-resistant RO membranes (48—52). A poly(/n j -2,5 dimethyl)pipera2inthiofura2anainide used in the presence of low (3 mg/L) concentrations of chlorine resulted in a membrane life of three years (48). A copolyamide hoUow-fiber membrane for use in desalination has been developed that is resistant to 0.5 mg/L chlorine (49). Udel is a slightly yellow but tianspaient engineering thermoplastic. It has low flammability and smoke emission and good electrical properties. It has excellent resistance to water, steam, and alkaline solutions. Specific uses for Udel iaclude microwave cookware, beverage dispensers, coffee brewers, cookware, hair dryers, com poppers, and steam table trays. Many engineering thermoplastics (e.g., polysulfone, polycarbonate, etc.) have limited utility in applications that require exposure to chemical environments. Environmental stress cracking [13] occurs when a stressed polymer is exposed to solvents. Poly(aryl ether phenylquin-oxalines) [27] and poly(aryl ether benzoxazoles) [60] show poor resistance to environmental stress cracking in the presence of acetone, chloroform, etc. This is expected because these structures are amorphous, and there is no crystallinity or liquid crystalline type structure to give solvent resistance. Thus, these materials may have limited utility in processes or applications that require multiple solvent coatings or exposures, whereas acetylene terminated polyaryl ethers [13] exhibit excellent processability, high adhesive properties, and good resistance to hydraulic fluid. [Pg.56]

ABS has a specific gravity of 1.03 to 1.06 and a tensile strength in the range of 6 to 7.5 X 10 psi. These polymers are tough plastics with outstanding mechanical properties. A wide variety of ABS modifications are available with heat resistance comparable to or better than polysulfones and polycarbonates (noted later in this section). Another outstanding property of ABS is its ability to be alloyed with other thermoplastics for improved properties. For example, ABS is alloyed with rigid PVC for a product with better flame resistance. [Pg.336]

Flame resistance The underwriters ruling on the use of self-extinguishing plastics for contact-carrying members and many other components introduces critical material selection problems. All TSs are basically self-extinguishing. Nylon, polyphenylene oxide, polysulfone, polycarbonate, vinyl, chlorinated polyether, chlorotrifluoroethy-lene, vinylidene fluoride, and fluorocarbon are examples of TPs that may be suitable for applications requiring self-extinguishing properties.
