Polypropylene woven oriented

In a previous work, the same authors also observed that the composite peel strength was significantly increased by introducing interleaved films of the same polymer between the layers of woven oriented tapes [30]. They continued working on PP self-reinforced composites enhanced with the addition of CNT, trying to improve properties by the use of interleaved films [28]. Samples of single-polymer polypropylene composites were produced with and without interleaved films, and with and without carbon nanofibers, located either in the oriented polypropylene tapes, in the interleaved film or in both. Maximum peel strength was observed... [Pg.513]

With respect to the research in this field, all-polypropylene (PP) composites have been extensively studied. Hine et al. investigated the influence of fabrication parameters that control the hot-compaction behavior of woven-oriented PP [23,24], The results indicated that molecular weight, crystallinity, reinforcement shape and the weave style are important for controlling the composites performance. Alcock et al. created unidirectional all-PP composite laminates from co-extruded three layer tape of PP (with a copolymer homopolymer copolymer structure) via filament winding [12]. The specific mechanical properties were comparable to those reported for a commercial unidirectional glass fiber reinforced PP. [Pg.700]

An important application for polypropylene is film tape. This is made by slitting unoriented film (cast or blown) into tapes 2 or 3.5 mm wide and stretching under heat about seven-fold. With cast film the orientation is more completely monoaxial and there is a tendency for the film to split along its length (fibrillate). Tubular film does not self-split so easily and also has a somewhat softer feel. Such tapes may be woven into sacks and these have... [Pg.264]

Polypropylene filaments, fibres, fabrics, partially and fully oriented yarns perform well in cordage, netting, woven bags. .. [Pg.150]

Monoaxially oriented polypropylene film tapes have been widely used for carpet backing and for woven sacks (replacing those made from jute). Combining strength and lightness, oriented PP straps have gained rapid and widespread acceptance for packaging. [Pg.394]

Mitsubishi Corp. has developed a Rovalpolypropylene fiber with good antistatic, anticorrosive, and color properties. It can be woven into carpet for computer rooms. Courtaulds Corp. invented an electrically conductive polypropylene fiber that has excellent chemical resistance. Unlike surface-treated conductive fibers, this polypropylene fiber provides uniform electrical conductivity across its filament. These conductive fibers are now offered in multifilament and monofilament forms at 12 and 18 tex. An antistatic polypropylene fiber of fine denier was also invented by researchers at East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai, China. It can be used in domestic polypropylene carpets. With hypothermal agglomerates, it can be prepared in partially oriented polypropylene filament yarn for use in antipollution, antistatic applications such as work clothes for operating personnel in oil, chemical, and electronics industries [230,231]. [Pg.248]

Ward and his coworkers investigated the interlayer adhesion in self-reinforced PP composites modified with different nano- and micron-sized particles [27-29]. They found that the introduction of a small amount of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) led to improved performance of polypropylene single-polymer composites obtained by hot compaction of oriented CNF/ PP tapes. The peel strength of a CNF/PP woven fabric composite was significantly increased. In addition, the authors pointed out that the drawn CNF/PP tapes showed substantial voiding around the fibers which were closed and sealed by the hot compaction process. As a result, the composite density increased to its initial value [27]. [Pg.513]

New forms of polypropylene (PP) fibrous material have emerged to supplement the established forms of staple fiber and continuous filaments [1]. These are of two distinct types. The first is stretched tape used extensively for woven sack fabrics. The second type relate to spht fiber tape yarns produced by splitting or fibrillation of highly oriented stretched tapes. [Pg.769]

Composite Fabrication. Orthotropic composites were fabricated using the PP/VB (50/50 wt.%) woven preforms. Four fabric preform layers were placed between layers of polypropylene sheet as shown in Figure 2. In order to produce orthotropic composites, the fabric layers were alternately oriented 90° because the woven preforms possessed different fiber counts in the warp and weft directions. The composites were consolidated at 200°C and 3500 kPa using a model 2696 Carver Laboratory Press with heated plates. The thickness of the PP sheets used in the composite fabrication process was varied in order to achieve the desired final composite composition and to control the distribution of the four fabric layers across the composite cross section. [Pg.87]

Polypropylene films are used in a variety of packaging applications. Both oriented and non-oriented films are used. Film tapes are used for carpet backing and sacks. Foamed sheet is used in a variety of applications including thermoformed packaging. Fibers are another important apphcation for polypropylene, particularly in carpeting, because of its low cost and wear resistance. Fibers prepared from polypropylene are used in both woven and nonwoven fabrics. [Pg.56]

Polypropylene (PP) Most applications use the isotactic form. Oriented (OPP) and unoriented films are used often for food packaging, sometimes in eombination with vinylidene chloride copolymers. Polypropylene fibers are used for webbing in outdoor furniture, earpets, and both woven and non-woven fabrics. Polypropylene is also an important engineering thermoplastic. [Pg.864]
