The floor console of the 1994 Chrysler Neon was the first unpainted polypropylene floor console used by a U.S. manufacturer [3]. Besides achieving cost reduction, the significantly lighter part eliminated the need for paint and its associated environmental burdens. The part was also of the same material as the IP and pillar trim, allowing for a large amount of a single material to be harvested from the interior of the vehicle. This helped to make end-of-life recycling more economical. The 1996 Ford F-150 also used a molded in color PP console with all of the parts made fi om PP [3]. The console was attached to the vehicle with two bolts that were easily accessible. 

Artificial surfaces must be resistant to cigarette bums, vandaUsm, and other harm. Fire resistance is most critically evaluated by the NBS flooring radiant panel test (10). In this test, a gas-fired panel maintains a heat flux, impinging on the sample to be tested, between 1.1 W/cm at one end and 0.1 W/cm at the other. The result of the bum is reported as the flux needed to sustain flame propagation in the sample. Higher values denote greater resistance to burning results depend on material and surface constmction. Polypropylene turf materials are characterized by critical radiant flux indexes which are considerably lower than those for nylon and acryflc polymers (qv) (11). 

By employing additives to improve interfacial adhesion and the cohesive strength of the mbber phase, natural mbber can compete with ethylene—propylene mbbers as an impact modifier for polypropylene. These hard grades, containing between 15 and 25% natural mbber, have the potential for use in the automotive and domestic markets, eg, in bumpers, spoilers, grilles, electrical connectors, and floor tiles. 

Binder formulas for carpet backing, aluminum foil to paper, vinyl flooring, tire cord, paper labeling, masking tape, and oriented polypropylene tape applications are available from Midgley and Rea in Skiest [215]. 

Impact damage occurred to one of 48 10 kg polypropylene tubs of calcium hypochlorite, each closed with a polythene lid, all supported on a wooden pallet and stretch-wrapped round the base with polyethylene film. The spilled material was swept up and discarded, and the pallet was moved to another part of the warehouse, and some 30 mins, later flames were seen at the base of the pallet [1]. Ignition was attributed to contact between residual solid hypochlorite on the pallet and lubricant drips on the concrete floor from fork lift traffic. Application of a dry powder extinguisher had little effect on the fire, but use of a 40 1 water extinguisher led to rapid escalation of the fire as contact between hypochlorite... 

Multilayer pipes with polyethylene or polypropylene for under-floor heating systems in domestic and commercial buildings, preventing oxygen from dissolving in the hot water and avoiding metal corrosion of other parts in the heating device. ..

Polyethylene is the most widespread polymer it is used in bags, containers, and wire insulation. Polyvinylchloride is used in the production of containers, plumbing accessories, synthetic leather, and floor tiles, and polypropylene is applied in the fabrication of rugs and containers [196],... 

Hot-melt spray adhesives will bond successfully carpets, fabrics, laminating panels, metals (both painted and unpainted), and both polyethylene and polypropylene film and sheet. Two important commercial uses at the time of writing are bonding sleeves of low-density polyethylene to ductile iron pipes and bonding sound-deadening materials and carpets to the floors of motor cars.

PVC, or 3, is one of the less commonly recycled plastics in the United States, although it is actively recycled in Europe. The recycled material is used to make non-food-bearing containers, shoe soles, flooring, sweaters, and pipes. Polypropylene, PP or... 

The consumption of polypropylene carpet in West Europe is about 0.5 MT, which is about 50% of all flooring materials for 2.6 billion sq.m. It is second to 3.6 billion sq.m, for nylon, whereas polyester is only used for bathroom rugs. Among the flooring materials used in West Europe, tufted carpet accounts for 60%. Among 500,000 tons of polypropylene carpet, tufted carpet accounts for 150 KT, machine woven, 130 KT, needle-punched, 100 KT, and carpet backing, 100 KT.

Floor coverings often comprise nylon pile yams with polyester, polypropylene, cotton, or fibreglass backing yarns and a fire retardant back-coating to ensure the whole floor covering composite passes the FAR 25.283(b) standard.
