Emulsion polymerization is widely used to produce polymers in the form of emulsions, such as paints and floor polishes. It also used to polymerize many water insoluble vinyl monomers, such as styrene and vinyl chloride. In emulsion polymerization, an agent emulsifies the monomers. Emulsifying agents should have a finite solubility. They are either ionic, as in the case of alkylbenzene sulfonates, or nonionic, like polyvinyl alcohol. [Pg.316]

Acrylates are primarily used to prepare emulsion and solution polymers. The emulsion polymerization process provides high yields of polymers in a form suitable for a variety of applications. Acrylate emulsions are nsed in the preparation of both interioi and exterior paints, floor polishes, and adhesives. Solution polymers of aciylates, frequently with minor concentrations of other monomers, are employed m the preparation of industrial coatings. Polymers of aciy hc acid can be used as superabsorbents in disposable diapers, as well as in formulation of superior, reduced-phosphate-level detergents. [Pg.17]

Emulsion Polymerization. The principal markets for aqueous dispersion polymers made hy emulsion polymerization of methaerylie esiers are the paint, paper, textile, floor polish, and leather industries where they arc used principally as coatings or binders. Copolymers of methyl methacrylate with either ethyl acrylate or butyl acrylate are most common. [Pg.990]

The final product of an emulsion polymerization is referred to as latex. Emulsion polymerization products can in some instances be employed directly without further separations but with appropriate blending operations. Such applications involve coatings, finishes, floor polishes, and paints. Solid polymer can be recovered from the latex by various techniques such as spray drying, coagulation by adding an acid, usually sulfuric acid, or by adding electrolyte salts. [Pg.599]
