Polydimethylsiloxanes copolymers

Poly(unsaturated ester)-siloxane segmented copolymers have been prepared by the polycondensation of epoxy-terminated polydimethylsiloxanes and carboxy-terminated poly(ethylene adipate-co-maleate) oligomers 243). Reactions have been conducted in cellosolve solvent, at 140-150 °C, in the presence of 2% by weight potassium hydroxide catalyst. The molecular weights reported were fairly low. Multiblock polyethylene-polydimethylsiloxane copolymers were obtained by the reaction of silane terminated PDMS and hydroxyl terminated polyethylene oligomers in the presence of stannous octoate as the catalyst 254). The reactions were conducted in refluxing xylene for 24 hours. PDMS block size was kept constant at 3,200 g/mole, whereas polyethylene segment molecular weights were varied between 1,200 and 6,500 g/mole. Thermal analysis and dynamic mechanical studies of the copolymers showed the formation of two-phase structures with crystalline polyethylene segments.

Segmented polyimide-polydimethylsiloxane copolymers have been successfully synthesized both in laboratory and industrial quantities to produce multiphase siloxane-modified polyimides. The siloxane detracts somewhat from the otherwise excellent thermo oxidative stability of the polyimide, but it does produce a number of important properties. These include multiphase behavior, improved adhesion to many substrates, improvements in fire resistance and enhanced gas and liquid separation membranes, where one wishes not only to maximize the contribution of the siloxane to permeability, but also to utilize the imide to re-... 

Wacker Specialties have also succeeded in the synthesis of new copolymers on the polyvinyl acetal basis containing long silicone chains. So, on the laboratory scale, polyvinyl acetal-co-polydimethylsiloxane-copolymers are obtained.

A blend of two polycarbonate copolymers, high-heat poly(ester-carbonate) (PEC) and polycarbonate-polydimethylsiloxane copolymer (PC-PDMS) provided an opaque, pearlescent blend. However, when a transesterification catalyst was used, the blend becomes miscible and translucent/transparent. The high-heat, ductile (HHD) materials were analyzed for a range of properties including optics, rheology, heat performance, flame retardance, and mechanical properties. The hydrolytic stability of the HHD materials was also measured by comparing the ductility of the blends before and after autoclaving.
