Poly PMMA mechanical properties

Hard lenses can be defined as plastic lenses that contain no water, have moduli in excess of 5 MPa (500 g/mm ), and have T well above the temperature of the ocular environment. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has excellent optical and mechanical properties and scratch resistance and was the first and only plastic used as a hard lens material before higher oxygen-permeable materials were developed. PMMA lenses also show excellent wetting in the ocular environment even though they are hydrophobic, eg, the contact angle is 66°. [Pg.101]

The critical chain length is often the onset of strength -related properties and is generally considered the lower end for useful mechanical properties. The Z value for polymers varies but is typically between 200 and 1000 units in length. Poly(methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is by far the predominant polymethacrylate used in rigid applications because it has crystal clear transparency, excellent weatherability (better than most other plastics), and a useful combination of stiffness, density, and moderate toughness. The glass transition temperature of the polymer is 105°C (221°F), and the heat deflection temperatures range from 75 to 100°C (167-212°F).
