Pollutants atmospheric input

However, Cl content can be influenced by anthropogenic and atmospheric inputs and Na by silicate weathering [4, 10,11, 37, 38] and thus the calculation of TDSeVaP is limited in the Ebro Basin, since the computation of Cl from pollution and Na from silicate weathering cannot be easily estimated while the input from the atmophere can be neglected according to Avila and Alarcon [39]. [Pg.112]

A calculation of maximum/minimum ratio from the atmospheric input data in Figure 3 yields the following results Pb = 33, Zn = 9, Cd = 17, Cr=1.5, Cu = 5, Ni = 4. We know that the burning of leaded gasoline is responsible for the large increase of Pb. Enormous metal production of Zn and Cd ores as well as refuse incineration are responsible for the increases of these metals. In addition, marine aerosols are an important source of Cd (Li, 1981). Obviously, Cu-Ni production from ores increased during this period but not nearly as much as for Zn-Cd. Also, combustion of fossil fuels contributed somewhat to the increase of Cu and Ni. The main source of Cr is steel and iron manufacturing which appears to not be as important an impact on the atmospheric environment as sources for the other metals. The pollution sources of Cr are minimal as reflected in the balance between riverine input and marine sediment output (Li, 1981). [Pg.4625]

Nutritional benefits may often be associated with pollutant inputs. Depending on the amount of atmospheric input involved, the pollutants can be harmful - as seen in the case of N saturation or S eutrophication of forests in Central Europe (Johnson and Lindberg 1992). One of the most important indirect effects of the pollution load of forests is that of accelerated soil acidification by acid rain (Reuss and Johnson 1986, Kreutzer etal. 1998). Acid deposition also affects nutrient cycling processes in forest ecosystems (Ulrich 1991, Matzner 1988, Kazda 1990). [Pg.59]

Concern is growing about the input of a wide range of synthetic organic compounds to the coastal ocean. To date there have been relatively few estimates of the atmospheric fluxes of synthetic organic compounds to the ocean, and these estimates have significant uncertainties. These compounds are often both persistent and toxic pollutants, and many have relatively high molecular weights. The calculation of the atmospheric input of these compounds to the... [Pg.284]
