Poker chipping

Most polymeric Hquid crystals are based on stiff rod-like molecular units which are called calamitic mesogens. There are some unusual polymers (which are not discussed here) that contain flat disk-like molecular units called discotic mesogens in which the disks form columnar arrays like stacks of poker chips. [Pg.306]

Children Pain interviews may be conducted with children as young as 3 or 4 years of age however, communication may be limited by vocabulary.34 Terms familiar to children such as hurt, owie, or boo boo may be used to describe pain. The VAS is best used with children older than 7 years of age. Other scales based on numbers of objects (e.g., poker chips), increasing color intensity, or faces of pain may be helpful for children between 4 and 7 years of age. In children younger than 3 to 4 years of age, behavioral or physiologic measures, such as pulse or respiratory rate, may be more appropriate. Pain assessment in newborns and infants relies on behavioral observation for such clues as vocalizations (crying and fussing), facial expressions,... [Pg.491]

Liner Propellant Bonding. The bonding properties of a typical CTPB liner and propellant system to a nitrile rubber insulation are shown in Table XIII. These data were obtained from 4-in. diameter "poker chip (4) specimens with a diameter to thickness ratio of 20 1. The tensile bond values shown are approximately equal to the strength of the propellant. [Pg.153]

Triaxial tests usually involve more elaborate testing equipment and more precise measuring techniques than those normally used for uniaxial and biaxial measurements. In the poker chip test (33, 59) the faces of a thin circular disc are bonded to rigid plates (Figure 18). The speci-... [Pg.215]

Refinement of the poker chip test to include a center load cell in one of the bonded plates is reported by Harbert 40). Figure 19 shows the stress-strain curves generated by external measurement as well as the failure point determined by the center load cell. [Pg.217]

In a recent attempt to bring an engineering approach to multiaxial failure in solid propellants, Siron and Duerr (92) tested two composite double-base formulations under nine distinct states of stress. The tests included triaxial poker chip, biaxial strip, uniaxial extension, shear, diametral compression, uniaxial compression, and pressurized uniaxial extension at several temperatures and strain rates. The data were reduced in terms of an empirically defined constraint parameter which ranged from —1.0 (hydrostatic compression) to +1.0 (hydrostatic tension). The parameter () is defined in terms of principal stresses and indicates the tensile or compressive nature of the stress field at any point in a structure —i.e.,... [Pg.234]

It is clear that the quenched material has lamellae that are both thinner in the chain direction and smaller in lateral extent. Both these parameters increase with slower rates of cooling. So, too, does density. The microstructure of PTFE prepared this way may be likened to a pack of rods (the helical polymer chains), which in turn comprise lamellar crystals. Consider a hexagonal poker chip as a macroscopic analogue of one lamella. The diameter of die poker chip is the lamellar breadth and its thin dimension is the lamellar thickness. The fully extended chain length of a 10-million-MW PTFE macromolecule would be ca. 26 pm while our thickest observed lamellae are ca. 0.5 pm thick. It therefore... [Pg.8]

In general, aromatic hydrocarbons and presumably fossil fuels containing aromatic molecules do not form extended stacks of molecules as embodied by a column of poker chips. H-H and H-C interactions are significant structural determinants for hydrocarbon molecules (59-60) and can lead to arrangements other than the graphitelike stack. To see a diffraction peak in the range of 3.3-3.8 A and infer a graphite structure is potentially naive. [Pg.378]

Despite the fact that adhesive joints are rarely designed to be loaded directly in tensile mode, tensile tests are eommon for evaluating adhesives. The axially-loaded butt (or poker chip ) joint geometry, as recommended by ASTM D897(52), is depicted in Fig. 4.11. [Pg.147]

An example of this phenomenon is made clear in an exercise called The Beer Game as described in The Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge. This is a board game using poker chips signifying inventory, preprinted playing cards indicating the fluctuations in demand at the retailer, and small forms on which the players write their orders to their suppliers. The scenario is that a retailer who sells beer is served by a distributor. The distributor is served by a warehouse, which is served by the manufacturer. Therefore, there are only four elements in this simple supply chain. There is a four-day lead time between each of the elements. [Pg.153]

An alternative version of extension occurs when the dimensions change in one direction and are constrained to be constant in the two mutually perpendicular directions. This is achieved by placing a thin flat sample, whose faces are bonded to rigid members, under tension or compression in the thin direction, colloquially termed poker chip geometry (Fig. 1-15), or by axial compression of a cylinder confined by a rigid cylindrical wall. Under these conditions, 722 = 7j3 = 0. If a sudden tensile strain e = 1 is accomplished and the stress relaxation is followed... [Pg.25]

The polymers in this series are very beautiful, colorless products which, on melting and molding, give clear poker chips much like Luc it e (polymetbyl methacrylate) except there was always at least one and sometimes more defects due to decomposition of the polymer into gaseous products. No stabilization additives were ever found to make it possible to mold these products without defects and gradually work on the problem was abandoned by us. [Pg.136]

In Figure 5.5, we show an egg carton with 12 numbered poker chips placed sequentially. Even with this simple example, we can see that the first poker chip could have been placed in any of the 12 egg wells, but the second chip would only have 11 possibilities, the third chip would only have 10 possible positions, etc. In fact there are 12 = 479,001,600 ways we could have put the 12 chips into the 12 egg wells, quite a few possibilities ... [Pg.95]

FIGURE S.S Twelve numbered white poker chips in a one dozen egg carton. [Pg.96]

Now suppose we want a mixture of red and white chips in the egg carton such that the sum of poker chips is still 12. We could put some red chips in the empty carton in some order as shown in Figure 5.7. Then we could put some numbered white chips into the empty egg wells. Finally, we could turn over the red and white chips to hide the numbering. [Pg.96]

Now consider an egg carton with only red poker chips and another with only white chips. Let red chips be the A chips and B the white chips. Then in each perfectly ordered carton box we would have (the numbers need not be six and six but could be eight and four etc.)... [Pg.98]

Axially loaded butt or poker-chip joints... [Pg.206]

Sometimes called the poker chip test.) This is effectively a butt joint to which tensile loads are applied, as shown in Fig. 81(a). At first sight, this appears to be a simple test in which the adhesive is loaded uniformly in tension. Unfortunately, this is far from the case. If the adhesive layer were thick (i.e. many times its lateral dimensions) as... [Pg.121]
