Coals (the plural is deliberately used because coal has no defined, uniform nature or structure) are fossil sources with low hydrogen content. The structure of coals means only the structural models depicting major bonding types and components relating changes with coal rank. Coal is classified, or ranked, as lignite, subbituminous, bituminous, and anthracite. This is also the order of increased aromaticity and decreased volatile matter. The H C ratio of bituminous coal is about 0.8, whereas anthracite has H C ratios as low as 0.2. [Pg.131]

Symbols separated by commas represent equivalent recommendations. Symbols for physical and chemical quantities should be printed in italic type. Subscripts and superscripts which are themselves symbols for physical quantities should be italicized all others should be in Roman type. Vectors and matrices should be printed in boldface italic type, e.g., B, b. Symbols for units should be printed in Roman type and should remain unaltered in the plural, and should not be followed by a full stop except at the end of a sentence. The plural form of a symbol is the same as the singular. Plurals of unit names are formed by adding an "s", except in henries hertz, lux, and siemens are not changed. [Pg.310]

These acids (51) are organic molecules that contain a plurality of cyano groups and are readily ionized to hydrogen ions and resonance-stabilized anions. Typical cyanocarbon acids are cyanoform, methanetricarbonitrile (5) 1,1,3,3-tetracyanopropene [32019-26-4] l-propene-l,l,3,3-tetracarbonitrile (52) 1,1,2,3,3-pentacyanopropene [45078-17-9], l-propene-l,l,2,3,3-pentacarbonitrile (51) l,l,2,6,7,7-hexacyano-l,3,5-heptatriene [69239-39-0] (53) 2-dicyanomethylene-l,l,3,3-tetracyanopropane [32019-27-5] (51) and l,3-cyclopentadiene-l,2,3,4,5-pentacarbonitrile [69239-40-3] (54,55). Many of these acids rival mineral acids in strength (56) and are usually isolable only as salts with metal or ammonium ions. The remarkable strength of these acids results from resonance stabilization in the anions that is not possible in the protonated forms. [Pg.405]

Amoeba (plural, amoebae) Protozoa that can alter their cell shape, usually by the extrusion of one or more pseudopodia. [Pg.603]

Ascoma (plural, ascomata) Fungal fruiting body that contains ascospores also termed an ascocarp. [Pg.605]

Ascus (plural, asci) Saclike cell of the sexual state formed by fungi in the phylum Ascomycota containing ascospores. [Pg.605]

Basidioma (plural, basidiomata)- Fruiting body that produces basidia also termed a basidiocarp. [Pg.606]

Mehrheit,/. majority plurality multiplicity, mehr-kantig, a. many-sided, -kemig, a. polynuclear, having more than one nucleus. Mehr-korperproblem, n. niany-body problem, -kristall, m. polycryatal. -linienspektrum, n. many-line spectrum, mehr-malig, a. repeated, -mals, adv. several times, repeatedly. [Pg.293]

Noun Endings. Since the case endings of nouns are occasionally puzzling, a r sumd of the ways in which German nouns may form nominative plurals from nominative singulars may be of assistance (note specially 7) ... [Pg.550]

Plurals from Latin and Greek neuters Studien from Studium, Materialien from Material, Dramen from Drama. [Pg.550]

The other cases are either the same as the corresponding nominative or formed from it, as follows genitive singular, -en, -ens. -es, -n, -ns, or -s dative and accusative singular and dative plural, -n or -en. [Pg.550]

The student should be warned against confusing chemical endings and case endings for example, -en may be equivalent to the English -ene or only a plural sign Terpenen means not terpenene but terpenes Ketone means not ketone but ketones Terpene, not terpene but terpenes. [Pg.553]

Nielsen [216] believes an agglomerate to be a plurality of contacting primary particles. Assuming that agglomerates behave like hard particles below a certain stress threshold, the author expects that high stresses should cause the particles constituting an agglomerate to move relative to each other. [Pg.30]

The second method is termed ad eosdem competition— to the same (products, plural) . Consider the solvolysis of 4-chlorobenzyne by methoxide ions and methanol. The nucleophile adds to one end or the other of the triple bond. Because of the 4-chloro substituent, both meta and para isomers are formed. Thus, there are four parallel reactions ... [Pg.106]

When whole cell containing plural enzymes with opposite selectivities and different (Michaelis-Menten constant) values are used, problems of low selectivities occur. If the substrate concentration is decreased, one of the enzymes with low Kra value catalyzes the reaction so that the selectivity can be improved. [Pg.209]

This makes the philosophical substmctures of a discipline also plural, as well as specific to the domain involved. As Schwab (1964b, p. 31) puts it,... [Pg.38]
