Sexual state

Ascus (plural, asci) Saclike cell of the sexual state formed by fungi in the phylum Ascomycota containing ascospores. [Pg.605]

These pheromones increase the reproductive success of older females, but just how consequential they are for white-footed mice is not yet clear. We can reasonably assume that they affect the number and fitness of the mice in the forest and so contribute to our story. Related pheromones regulate reproduction in other species of mice, including common laboratory mice (Mus musculus), which have been studied in considerable detail. Other mice also have additional signals in their urine to advertise their occupancy of a particular area and to communicate their sex, sexual state, and relative age it is likely that white-footed mice make use of such signals as well. [Pg.207]

Sexual states ascospores for Zygosaccharomyces, Saccharomyces, Torulaspora, Schizo-saccharomyces, Pichia, Debaromyces, Geotrichum (very rare), Kluveromyces and Dekkera (rare). [Pg.290]

The final point is perhaps the most critical as well as the most overlooked. Even under normal circumstances the fish thyroid cascade responds to a wide array of environmental variables and changes in whole-animal physiologic state. In fact, much fish thyroid literature (unrelated to ecotoxicants) documents thyroidal responses to variables such as temperature, stressors, nutritional availability and sexual state. The thyroidal system is also pivotal in the total endocrine network. Consequently,... [Pg.401]

The literature on the oxytocic action of quinine is rife with controversy. Such a situation emphasizes the need for exact information concerning such factors as the sexual state of the animals at the time of the study and the composition of the bath employed in the in vitro experiments. Both these factors profoundly influence the response of the uterus to drugs. [Pg.179]

Cytisine is almost indistinguishable from nicotine in its pharmacological actions. On the uterus, little effect is noted on isolated preparations, but in vivo, cytisine induces strong contractions (118, 119). According to Dale and Laidlaw, the effect produced by cytisine in the cat depends on the sexual state of the animal. The uterus of the virgin animal is inhibited, whereas that of the pregnant cat is stimulated. Powerful contractions have been observed after the intravenous injection of 1.0 mg. in the gravid animal. [Pg.182]
