Pleural

Newer bleomycins such as peplomycin and especially liblomycin, are more resistant to bleomycin hydrolase. This results in less lung toxicity but more bone marrow toxicity, and allows for a different spectmm of antitumor action. Bleomycin is inactive orally it is given intravenously, intramuscularly, subcutaneously, or directiy into a cavity such as the pleural cavity. The majority of dmg is excreted unchanged in the urine. [Pg.158]

Invasive pathogens either aggressively invade the tissues surrounding the primary site of infeehon or are passively transported around the body in the blood, lymph, cerebrospinal fluid or pleural fluids. Some, espeeially aggressive organisms, do both, setting up a number of expansive seeondary sites of infeehon in various organs. [Pg.83]

As a consequence of the inhalation of mineral dusts, infiltration into the lung of inflammatory phagocytic cells, namely PMN and macrophages, occurs (Rola-Pleszczynski et al., 1984). Analysis of the cell populations of the rat pleural cavities after injection with asbestos and silica dust also showed both degranulation and reduction of the mast cell population (Edwards etal., 1984), and it is of interest to note that histamine augments the particle-stimulated generation of macrophage superoxide production (Diaz et al., 1979). [Pg.249]

Chest x-ray Useful for detection of cardiac enlargement, pulmonary edema, and pleural effusions. [Pg.39]

The examiner may hear diminished breath sounds, crackles, wheezes, or pleural friction rub during auscultation of the lungs. [Pg.139]

The transcellular fluid includes the viscous components of the peritoneum, pleural space, and pericardium, as well as the cerebrospinal fluid, joint space fluid, and the gastrointestinal (GI) digestive juices. Although the transcellular fluid normally accounts for about 1% of TBW, this amount can increase significantly during various illnesses favoring fluid collection in one of these spaces (e.g., pleural effusions or ascites in the peritoneum). The accumulation of fluid in the transcellular space is often referred to as third spacing. To review the calculations of the body fluid compartments in a representative patient, see Patient Encounter 1. [Pg.404]

Voriconazole is started in the patient along with 1 mg/kg per day of methylprednisolone to control the graft-versus-host disease. Her tacrolimus dose was also decreased by 70% with the addition of voriconazole and a recent tacrolimus blood level of 1 0 ng/mL. Unfortunately, the patient remains febrile with worsening respiratory pain. A repeat CT scan of the lung demonstrates new nodules, and pleural effusion in the right lung. [Pg.1228]

Involves removal of fluid in the pleural cavity via a needle. The fluid then is assayed for presence cancerous cells. This procedure has low sensitivity and depends on the presence of a pleural effusion... [Pg.1327]

Stage IV = Growth involving one or both ovaries with distant metastasis beyond the pelvis (i.e. if pleural effusion present, confirm cytology or any parenchymal liver metastasis equals stage IV). [Pg.1390]

Moderate emetogenic potential take with meals and a full glass of water edema periorbital edema is characteristic pleural effusions, ascites, or pulmonary edema also occur rash diarrhea neutropenia, thrombocytopenia (sometimes difficult to distinguish from CML-induced cytopenias) increased liver function tests... [Pg.1409]

Chylothorax The presence of lymphatic fluid (chyle) in the pleural cavity. [Pg.1562]

Empyema Pus in the pleural cavity, usually secondary to infection in the lung. [Pg.1565]

Mediastinum The space in the thoracic cavity between the pleural sacs and behind the sternum. [Pg.1570]

Pneumothorax The presence of air in the pleural cavity, often causing part of the lung to collapse. [Pg.1574]
