Pathogen invasive

Plants have envolved a wide array of chemical defences against pathogens. These include secondary metabolites with anti-microbial properties [57]. Some secondary metabolites are constitutively present in normally developed healthy plants, whereas others are induced by pathogen invasion [58]. The latter include phytoalexins, which are synthesized de novo after a pathogen attack [43], and phytoanticipins [59]. 

Low concentrations of organic acids are not effective against Salmonella enterica sv. Typhimurium attached to broiler carcasses (Lillard et al., 1987 Tamblyn and Conner, 1994), and application could result in induction of tolerance, which in turn would have an impact on the virulence of a pathogenic invasive organism (Hill, O Driscoll, and Booth, 1995).

Lipids play many essential roles in cell biology. They act as strnctnral materials or as cell signals, provide a barrier for ion separation, and prevent cells from pathogen invasion and water loss. Among many other fnnctions, they also act as temperatnre sensors and serve as a substrate for eicosanoids (Slabas et al., 2001). To fulfill these functions, n-6 and n-3 FA that cannot be synthesized by animal organisms need to be delivered in a diet.
