Plastics data sheet

It is important for the designer to become familiar with all the information that is available for each plastic, especially that which is pertinent to the product design requirements. Designers, who are knowledgeable of the data derived from metal tests, could have a tendency to apply the plastic data sheet information in a manner similar to that used for metals. This could be understood because there is no warning that some of the data supplied by the manufacturer are applicable only when use and test conditions are nearly the same. [Pg.32]

Plastic material suppliers provide material data sheets for each grade they produce. At first glance, there could be a tendency to apply the plastic information in a similar fashion to that of other materials. If such a procedure were to be followed, the result would not only lead to disappointment but also perhaps even to failure for many products. The reason for the difference in treating the plastic data sheets from those of other materials is the behavior of plastics under load and under varying environmental conditions, which normally are not factors with other materials such as steel (Chapter 2). [Pg.131]

Quahty control testing of siUcones utilizes a combination of physical and chemical measurements to ensure satisfactory product performance and processibihty. Eor example, in addition to the usual physical properties of cured elastomers, the plasticity of heat-cured mbber and the extmsion rate of TVR elastomers under standard conditions are important to the customer. Where the siUcone appHcation involves surface activity, a use test is frequently the only rehable indicator of performance. The application of appropriate data to product design can mean the difference between the success and failure of manufactured products made from any material (plastic, steel, etc.). There are different sources of information on plastics. There is the data sheet compiled by a manufacturer of the material and derived from tests conducted in accordance with standardized specifications. Another source is the description of outstanding characteristics of each plastic, along with the listing of typical applications. [Pg.32]

Design problems with the other conventional materials of construction are usually solved with the aid of textbooks or handbooks that refer the reader to data sheets where the characteristics of a specific material are listed. The yield point is the first point on the stress-strain curve at which an increase in strain occurs without an increase in stress. The stress at which a material exhibits a special limiting deviation from the proportionality of stress-to-strain is the yield strength. A material whose stress-strain curve exhibits points of zero slope may be considered to have a yield point such as described in Fig. 2-11. The data sheets usually omit the yield strength when there is a zero slope point on the stress-strain curve in the yield region. The monomers, catalysts or hardeners, or plasticizers can include chemicals with the potential to irritate the skin, mucous membranes or respiratory tract. Some can promote skin or respiratory sensitization. Health and Safety Issues. Polyesterether elastomers derived from dimethyl terephthalate, butanediol, and Ptmeg are not hazardous according to the published Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for this elastomer. Polymers of a similar structure containing isophthalic acid are also not considered hazardous. For other copolymer elastomers, the MSDS put out by suppliers should be consulted by potential users before evaluation. One environmental advantage of thermoplastic elastomers of this type is that they are melt-reprocessible and thus scrap and off-specification material and even obselete parts can be easily recycled. On-line inspection is a form of testing and in this context dimensional measurements are those most often made. Apart from gauges, micrometers and so on, there are various optical, electrical, nuclear and other methods which may have advantages in production circumstances. Descriptions of the use of such techniques can be found in the literature and in manufacturers data sheets. Some fairly recent examples relating to rubber and plastics products are given in references 12 - 16. However, the various techniques will not be reviewed here. [Pg.102]

Data sheets on the solvent resistance of various plastics and rubbers are available from the primary manufacturers. In addition, a number of O-ring manufacturers publish information on the solvent and chemical resistance of elastomers used in O-rings. In this test, a small sample of material (127 mm x 13 mm, or 5 in. x 0.5 in.) is exposed vertically to a small Bunsen burner-type flame from underneath (in the UL 94 V test) and the results show a rating, ranging from V-0 (best), through V-l, V-2 to B (for Burn). Materials with a B rating on the UL 94 Vertical test can also be tested in the less severe UL 94 HB (for horizontal burning), where the assessment is whether a flame spread rate of 4in./min is achieved. It is the most widely used fire-test specification for plastic materials, especially fire-retarded ones, and forms the basis of the famous Yellow Card used by ULs to list the plastic materials. The results from these tests are almost invariably found in a variety of specifications and data sheets. [Pg.644]
