Plastic product design ASTM tests

This review concerns the long-term behavior of plastics when exposed to conditions that include continuous stresses, environment, excessive heat, abrasion, and continuous contact with liquids. This subject has been reviewed in Chapter 2 (LONG-TERM LOAD BEHAVIOR) but since it is a very important subject the review is continuing. Tests such as those outlined by ASTM D 2990 that describe in detail the specimen preparations and testing procedure are intended to produce consistency in observations and records by various manufacturers, so that they can be correlated to provide meaningful information to product designers. 

The ASTM Test Method to Measure the Resistance to SCO of Polyethylene (PE) Pipes and Resins (F1473) is generally known as the PENT test, initially focused on gas pipes. It is applicable to all PE products and to otter plastics in which SOG occurs. Over 90 research papers on SCO in PE have demonstrated the relevance of the PENT test to engineering design and its applicability to product material behavior for end use applications [f, 2,5]. This research shows how the mettodology of the PENT test on PE can be extended to other pdymers. 

In order to verify that the material properties of the field-applied CFRP system are inline with the properties used in the design, tensile tests are performed in accordance with ASTM D3039-14 on test panels that are field fabricated using the carbon-fiber fabric, resins, and samration equipment used in the production mns for the field-installed CFRP lining system. These panels are made with typical minimum dimensions of 12 X 12 in (30 x 30 cm) and are prepared on a smooth, flat surface overlaid with plastic (polyethylene or vinyl) sheeting. 

Several methods are used to determine the color of plasticizers. The ASTM method of plasticizers testing includes an abbreviated procedure veiy similar to the plahnum-cobalt scale method described in detail in a separate standard. Color of transparent hquids is also measmed by Gardener color scale. Saybolt chromometer originaUy designed for petrolemn products is also used, especially in the case of mineral oils. ...
