Transmaterialisation is a more fundamental approach to the problem, which, with the goal of sustainable development, would ultimately switch consumption to only those resources that are renewable on a short timescale. Clearly petroleum, which takes millions of years to form, is not an example of such a sustainable resource. For the method to be truly effective, the wastes associated with the conversion and consumption of such resources must also be environmentally compatible on a short timescale. The use of polyolefin plastic bags for example, which have lifetimes in the environment of hundreds of years, is not consistent with this (no matter how they compare with alternative packaging materials at other stages in their lifecycle), nor is the use of some hazardous process auxiliaries which are likely to cause rapid environmental damage on release into the environment. 

Recycling of plastic bags and film (which are mostly LDPE/LLDPE and HDPE) is more widespread. The study by Moore Recycling Associates showed that over 90% of the U.S. population has access to plastic collection programs for plastic bags within a 10 mile radius, and over 70% to plastic film recycling [12].

The study showed that the total energy consumption and the total emissions would be lower for the plastic bag than for the glass bottle. Transports constitutes a large part of the environmental impact the greater environmental impact associated with the glass bottle is thus a consequence of its higher weight. 

The first LCA study, from Boustead Consulting and Associates, compares the LCA of single-use plastic bags with single-use paper. The cradle-to-gate analysis includes the environmental impacts of plastic bags from the creation of the plastic from raw materials to plastic pellets. 

There are cases in which one fragment of paper can be associated with another. For example, if a ransom note is written on a pad of paper, and the note is carelessly tom out of the pad, it may be possible to physically match the tear marks on the pad to those on the sheet. A fit such as this is called a physical match. Physical matches can also be made between a piece of tape and a roll, a plastic bag and a source roll, and many other kinds of evidence.
