Starch is a polysaccharide found in many plant species. Com and potatoes are two common sources of industrial starch. The composition of starch varies somewhat in terms of the amount of branching of the polymer chains (11). Its principal use as a flocculant is in the Bayer process for extracting aluminum from bauxite ore. The digestion of bauxite in sodium hydroxide solution produces a suspension of finely divided iron minerals and siUcates, called red mud, in a highly alkaline Hquor. Starch is used to settle the red mud so that relatively pure alumina can be produced from the clarified Hquor. It has been largely replaced by acryHc acid and acrylamide-based (11,12) polymers, although a number of plants stiH add some starch in addition to synthetic polymers to reduce the level of residual suspended soHds in the Hquor. Starch [9005-25-8] can be modified with various reagents to produce semisynthetic polymers. The principal one of these is cationic starch, which is used as a retention aid in paper production as a component of a dual system (13,14) or a microparticle system (15). [Pg.32]

Electrodialysis. In electro dialysis (ED), the saline solution is placed between two membranes, one permeable to cations only and the other to anions only. A direct electrical current is passed across this system by means of two electrodes, causiag the cations ia the saline solution to move toward the cathode, and the anions to the anode. As shown ia Figure 15, the anions can only leave one compartment ia their travel to the anode, because a membrane separating them from the anode is permeable to them. Cations are both excluded from one compartment and concentrated ia the compartment toward the cathode. This reduces the salt concentration ia some compartments, and iacreases it ia others. Tens to hundreds of such compartments are stacked together ia practical ED plants, lea ding to the creation of alternating compartments of fresh and salt-concentrated water. ED is a continuous-flow process, where saline feed is continuously fed iato all compartments and the product water and concentrated brine flow out of alternate compartments. [Pg.251]

Pneumatic controllers are made of Bourdon tubes, bellows, diaphragms, springs, levers, cams, and other fundamental transducers to accomplish the control function. If operated on clean, diy plant air, they offer good performance and are extremely reliable. The ionic liquid process has a number of advantages over traditional cationic polymerization processes such as the Cosden process, which employs a liquid-phase aluminium(III) chloride catalyst to polymerize butene feedstocks [30]. The separation and removal of the product from the ionic liquid phase as the reaction proceeds allows the polymer to be obtained simply and in a highly pure state. Indeed, the polymer contains so little of the ionic liquid that an aqueous wash step can be dispensed with. This separation also means that further reaction (e.g., isomerization) of the polymer s unsaturated ot-terminus is minimized. In addition to the ease of isolation of the desired product, the ionic liquid is not destroyed by any aqueous washing procedure and so can be reused in subsequent polymerization reactions, resulting in a reduction of operating costs. The ionic liquid technology does not require massive capital investment and is reported to be easily retrofitted to existing Cosden process plants. [Pg.322]

Block copolymers have been synthesized on an industrial scale mainly by anionic or cationic polymerization, although monomers for block components are limited to ones capable of the process. Intensive academic and technological interest in radical block copolymerization using macroinitiators is growing. This process can be implemented in plants with easier handling of materials, milder conditions of operation, and a variety of materials to give various kinds of block copolymers to develop a wide application area [1-3]. [Pg.755]
