The principle of operation of the hydraulic reciprocating pump is similar to the beam pump, with a piston-like sub-surface pump action. The energy to drive the pump, however, is delivered through a hydraulic medium, the power fluid, commonly oil or water. The power fluid drives a downhole hydraulic motor which in turn drives the pump. A separate surface pump delivers the hydraulic power. The power fluid system can be of the closed loop or of the open type. In the latter case, the power fluids are mixed with the produced fluid stream. The performance of the hydraulic pump is primarily monitored by measuring the discharge pressures of both surface and sub-surface pumps. [Pg.231]

A homogenize is a high pressure positive pump with three, five, or seven pistons, that is driven by a motor and equipped with an adjustable homogenizing valve. Smoother flow and greater capacity are obtained with more pistons, which force the product iato a chamber that feeds the valve. In design and operation, it is desirable to minimize the power requirements for obtaining an acceptable level of homogenization. Trip Valves The trip valve is part of a system that is used where a specific valve action (i.e., fail up, Fail down, or lock in last position) is required when pneumatic supply pressure to the control valve falls befow a preset level. Trip systems are used primarily on springless piston ac tuators requiring fail-open or fail-closed acrion. An air storage or Volume tank and a check v ve are used with the trip valve to provide power to stroke the valve when supply pressure is lost. Trip valves are designed with hysteresis around the trip point to avoid instabihty when the trip pressure and the reset pressure settings are too close to the same value. [Pg.786]

High-speed units are normally separable. That is, the compressor frame and driver are separated by a coupling or gear box.
