The hot section (Fig. 5) is controlled by a cascade loop which is based on a selected pumping rate (150 gpm) and sterilization temperature set in the TIC. Changes in the feed temperature are monitored at TTl which will automatically override the steam supply to keep the temperature at set point. Steam flow rate is monitored (by FE) and flow is automatically compensated should a large drawdown of steam occur elsewhere in the plant. Temperature is recorded at the beginning and end of the hot section. The hot section should be well insulated and special care should be given to the pipe supports for expansion. The nozzle and the pipe support will share support of the overall line weight. Each will share the load in proportion to its respective stiffness. As a vessel is loaded, it moves downward because of deflection of the load cells and support stmcture. Pipes rigidly attached to a vessel restrict its free movement and assume some portion of the load that cannot be measured by the load cells. This is very detrimental to scale accuracy. Deflection of the load cell is unavoidable deflection of the vessel support stmcture should be minimized. Anything which increases vessel deflection, eg, mbber pads used for shock protection, must be avoided. The total number of pipes should be minimized and be of the smallest diameter, thinnest wall possible. Pipe mns to weigh vessels must be horizontal and the first pipe support should be as far as possible from the vessel. Alternatively, a section of mbber hose or flexible bellows should be used to make the final connection to the vessel. The scale should be caUbrated using weights, not by means of an electrical simulation method, which cannot account for the effects of the piping or test the correct functioning of the scale. [Pg.337]

Whenever a change in piping direction occurs, the elevation of the pipe mn should also change. If the main piperack is at an elevation of 4 m, then the lateral piping can either go up to 5 m or drop down to 3 m. Compressible fluid flow occurs between the two extremes of isothermal and adiabatic conditions. For adiabatic flow the temperature decreases (normally) for decreases in pressure, and the condition is represented by p V (k) = constant. Adiabatic flow is often assumed in short and well-insulated pipe, supporting the assumption that no heat is transferred to or from the pipe contents, except for the small heat generated by fricdon during flow. Isothermal pVa = constant temperature, and is the mechanism usually (not always) assumed for most process piping design. This is in reality close to actual conditions for many process and utility service applications. [Pg.54]

Design of vessel and vent line pipe supports is very important because very large forces can be encountered as soon as venting begins. Figure 4 shows the equations and nomenclature to calculate forces on pipe bends. The authors have heard of situations where vent line bends have been straightened, lines broken off, or vent catch tanks knocked off their foundations by excessive forces. For bends, the transient effects of the initial shock wave, the transition from vapor flow to two-phase flow, and steady state conditions should be considered.
