The primary appHcation for barrier polymers is food and beverage packaging. Barrier polymers protect food from environmental factors that could compromise both taste and shelf life. They also help retain desirable flavors and aroma. Barrier polymers are also used for packaging medical products, agricultural products, cosmetics, and electronic components and in moldings, pipe, and tubing. 

Impact polystyrenes have found use in the manufacture of refrigerator door liners and in packaging. They are also commonly used for appHance housings, radio and television cabinets, sporting goods, toys, cameras, furniture, luggage, pipe and fittings, automotive parts, and women s shoe heels (96). 

Software packages are commercially available for simulation of hydrauhc transients. These may be used to analyze piping systems to reveal unsatisfactoi y behavior, and they aUow the assessment of design changes such as increases in pipe-wall thickness, changes in valve actuation, and addition of check valves, surge tanks, and pulsation dampeners.

Tolling presents a special consideration that can make the training step easier. Typically a toller s technical staff, operators and mechanics are knowledgeable in the basic operations and tasks related to the toller s specialty. For example, experienced operators may know operations of the reactors, columns, exchangers, and packaging equipment quite well. The mechanical personnel may be very familiar with the required safe work practices, equipment cleaning procedures and maintenance tasks for standard vessels and piping.
