Primary benefits of the second-generation acrylics included increased toughness and impact strength of metal-to-metal bonds, as well as the ability to bond metal surfaces, even oily metal surfaces, with little or no surface preparation. If produced gas contains water vapour it may have to be dried (dehydrated). Water condensation in the process facilities can lead to hydrate formation and may cause corrosion (pipelines are particularly vulnerable) in the presence of carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide. Hydrates are formed by physical bonding between water and the lighter components in natural gas. They can plug pipes and process equipment. Corrosion Resistant Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP). Fiber glass reinforcement bonded with furfuryl alcohol thermosetting resias provides plastics with unique properties. Excellent resistance to corrosion and heat distortion coupled with low flame spread and low smoke emission are characteristics that make them valuable as laminating resins with fiber glass (75,76). Explosion-bonded products are used in the manufacture of process equipment for the chemical, petrochemical, and petroleum industries where the corrosion resistance of an expensive metal is combined with the strength and economy of another metal. Tank tmck drivers may be inexperienced in the handling of chemicals and, therefore, it is essential that the plant personnel be alert in checking the driver s operations and in correcting any possible deficiencies (see Transportation). [Pg.101]

Polypropylene can be fabricated by almost any process used for plastics (see Plastics processing). The extmsion of pipe and injection mol ding of fittings present no unusual problem. However, there is no way to bond the fittings to the pipe except by remelting the polymer, which is impractical on most constmction sites. The resin can be reinforced by glass fibers, mineral fillers, or other types of fillers and can be pigmented readily. [Pg.327]

In joining reinforced thermosetting pipe it is particularly important that the pipe be cut without chipping or cracking it. It is also important to sand, file, or grind any mold-release agent from the surfaces to be cemented. Joints are built up layer by layer of adhesive-saturated reinforcement by following the manufacturer s recommended procedure. Application of adhesive to the surfaces to be joined and assembly of these surfaces shall produce a continuous bond and provide an adhesive seal to protect the reinforcement from attack by the contents of the pipe.
