At first, a clear statement should be made of the measured value y and which relationship exists between y and the parameters piypiy-ypm on which it depends. If possible, that should be done in form of a mathematical equation, y = ffp ypiy ->pm)- From this the sources of uncertainty for each part of the process should be derived and listed. Some of the parameters on their part depend from other variables pij. Also these dependencies have to be considered in form of equations or schemes, where pictograms, spreadsheets, and cause-effect diagrams (as schematically shown in Fig. 4.7) may be applied as useful tools.

While Enghsh is the only MHRA-approved language, other language versions may be used upon certification of identical content. S)unbols, pictograms and educational material are also discussed. The MHRA guidance and appendices are essential reading for those required to write PILs, generally members of the medical department. 

In Europe, 100,204 commercial chemical substances have been recognized and numbered under EINECS (European INventory of Existing Commercial chemical Substances) by the European Chemical Bureau (ECB) System. Another 4,381 new substances are classified under ELINCS Information System (European List of Notified Chemical Substances) since May 11, 1981. Among these. In Europe 1,230 chemical substances are officially identified as irritant or corrosive with Xi and C pictograms and risk sentences.

Consideration should be given to the colour-coding of labels, and the use of pictograms and suitable language(s) on the label where culturally appropriate.

For transport, it is expected that application of the GHS will be similar to application of current transport requirements. Containers of dangerous goods will be marked with pictograms that address acute toxicity, physical hazards, and environmental hazards. As is true for workers in other sectors, workers in the transport sector will be trained. The elements of the GHS that address such elements as signal words and hazard statements are not expected to be adopted in the transport sector. 

Label element means one type of information that has been harmonized for use in a label, e.g. pictogram, signal word ... 

Pictogram means a graphical composition that may include a symbol plus other graphic elements, such as a border, background pattern or colour that is intended to convey specific information ... 

Precautionary statement means a phrase (and/or pictogram) that describes recommended measures that should be taken to minimize or prevent adverse effects resulting from exposure to a hazardous product, or improper storage or handling of a hazardous product ...

A precautionary statement means a phrase (and/or pictogram) that describes recommended measures that should be taken to minimise or prevent adverse effects resulting from exposure to a hazardous product, or improper storage or handling of a hazardous product. The GHS label should include appropriate precautionary information, the choice of which is with the labeller or the competent authority. Annex 3 contains examples of precautionary statements, which can be used, and also examples of precautionary pictograms, which can be used where allowed by the competent authority. 

The GHS hazard pictograms, signal word and hazard statements should be located together on the label. The competent authority may choose to provide a specified layout for the presentation of these and for the presentation of precautionary information, or allow supplier discretion. Specific guidance and examples are provided in the Chapters on individual hazard classes. 

In addition to its use in pictograms, colour can be used on other areas of the label to implement special labelling requirements such as the use of the pesticide bands in the FAO Labelling Guide, for signal words and hazard statements or as background to them, or as otherwise provided for by the competent authority. 

General and specific considerations concerning labelling requirements are provided in Hazard communication Labelling (Chapter 1.4). Annex 2 contains summary tables about classification and labelling. Annex 3 contains examples of precautionary statements and pictograms which can be used where allowed by the competent authority.
