Physico-Chemical Analyses

As there now exists a large body of laboratory studies on each of the variable systems, for example the effect of die lime/silica ratio in the slag on the desulphurization of liquid iron, the most appropriate phase compositions can be foreseen to some extent from these laboratory studies when attempting to optimize the complex indusuial process. The factorial uials are not therefore a shot in the dark , but should be designed to take into account die laboratory information. Any qualitative difference between die results of a factorial uial, and the expectations predicted from physico-chemical analysis might suggest the presence of a variable which is important, but which was not included in the nials. [Pg.368]

The control of materials purity and of environmental conditions requires to implement physico-chemical analysis tools like ESC A, RBS, AUGER, SEM, XTM, SIMS or others. The principle of SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy) is shown in Eig. 31 an ion gun projects common ions (like 0+, Ar+, Cs+, Ga+,. ..) onto the sample to analyze. In the same time a flood gun projects an electron beam on the sample to neutralize the clusters. The sample surface ejects electrons, which are detected with a scintillator, and secondary ions which are detected by mass spectrometry with a magnetic quadrupole. [Pg.340]

When a bead of a gel-type CFP material is in the dry state, for practical purposes it can be considered as a solid material (thus possessing a mass, a volume and a shape). When in the swollen state, a CFP material can be still considered as a solid from the practical point of view, but this circumstance is now an authentic approximation. In fact, physico-chemical analysis reveals that under some circumstances this alleged solid material is rather a very viscous liquid. More precisely, it is a suspension of interconnected polymer chains in the swelling agent. Each swollen CFP bead can be considered as a drop, which can retain a definite shape owing to the existence of the polymer framework. [Pg.202]

Along with the toxicity test battery, physico-chemical analysis of waste and each leachate produced either in the prerequisite study (i.e. Tier I in Figure 2) or in the WASTOXHAS procedure are useful to understand the main processes that can influence release (and rate of release) of pollutants from a solid matrix. In this sense, ecotoxicological and physico-chemical approaches are complementary to ensure a sound and reliable assessment of the potential environmental impacts of solid wastes. [Pg.353]

This means that measurements are made without systematic errors. If such is not the case, a correct model could not account for the experimental results or, similarly, a wrong model could fit the experimental results. This point is, of course, of capital importance and, alas, can only be detected by a careful physico-chemical analysis of results and not by statistical procedures. [Pg.310]

This book is intended for users of techniques for the physico-chemical analysis of industrial catalysts and those who potentially require this analysis. The authors are research engineers at the departments of Physics and Analysis and of Kinetics and Catalyst of the Institut Francis du Petrole (IFP). Their role is to develop characterisation techniques and satisfy the requirements of research projects which involve the characterisation of solids. The book is derived from an internal IFP training course, prepared by the authors and intended for new technical staffin laboratories preparing catalytic solids. The purpose of this course is twofold. On the one hand, we arc clearly aiming to show what can be done. On the other hand, and perhaps more importantly, it is necessary to establish what cannot be done, by specifying the limits in terms of quantification and range of application of the techniques. [Pg.12]

X-ray spectrometry has benefited, as have other physico-chemical analysis methods, from the many recent advances in electronics and micro-computing. We have seen that, for qualitative analysis, software is used for the automatic identification of peaks. For quantitative analysis, the majority of equipment manufacturers provide highly extensive correction software packages. Finally, the automatic handling of samples in the spectrometer is well established (sample handlers with a capacity of 72 to 100 samples). [Pg.89]

The characteristics of departmental as well as final effluent were examined. Physico -chemical analysis was carried out according to Standard Methods [ 6 ]. The final effluent was subjected to various methods of treatment. [Pg.114]

In comparison to a TLC-based screening both the quality and sensivity of HPLC separations of a physico-chemical screening via HPLC is better. On the other hand, TLC allows a parallel, quick, and cheap handling of samples, and is superior in the mode of detection (UV/VIS and staining). As well as eluted compounds out of HPLC separations, spots from TLC can easily be subjected to subsequent physico-chemical analysis (MS, IR, NMR etc.) via scrape off and elution from the silica gel materials. [Pg.123]

From the results of the physico-chemical analysis, it follows that deviations from the ideal behavior were observed in all the boundary binaries as well as in the ternary system. With regard to the fact that the investigated system has a common cation, the observed deviations from the ideal behavior have to be a consequence of the anionic interaction only. The observed interaction of components could be of different origin. A different character of interaction has to be considered in the boundary binaries KF-KBF4 and KCI-KBF4. [Pg.34]
