Several taxonomies of stressors in the work environment can be found (e.g. Cooper and Marshall 1976 Cox 1978 Cox et al. 2000 Fletcher 1988, 1991 Warr 1987) and considerable consensus and overlap in the work stressors identified can be found. Factors such as financial remuneration, poor physical work environment, outdated technology, high workload, excessive responsibility, low social position, lack of autonomy and control, variety in job, external job demands/goals, role conflict and ambiguity, lack of support and poor career prospects have all been identified as sources of stress in the work environment (Fletcher 1988 Warr 1987). [Pg.17]

The investigation should continue once an unsafe act is identified. If accidents were investigated correctly, other contributing causes would be sought. What about the physical work environment Are all the machines guarded Have there been regular audits of the area Is a structured safety system in place The major question I would ask when investigating an accident that only lists unsafe acts is Why did the system allow the person to commit these unsafe acts ... [Pg.59]

The physical work environment - noise, cold, heat, etc. [Pg.122]

A company installed a new air conditioner for the workers of their appliance assembly in an effort to improve their physical work environment. The new air conditioner did make the work environment more comfortable but, for some unknown reason, the production of the workers actually decreased, and accidents and rejects increased. In an aOanpt to increase production and decrease rejects and workplace injuries, some new incentives were introduced but, to the company s dismay, the production remained low and work-related incidents continued to occur. Finally, the discovery was made that the new air-conditioning system was so loud that the workers could no longer talk or be heard by their fellow woricers during the assembly process. Since the workers were doing a repetitive task and were also receiving low wages, their job satisfaction depended on their social interaction with fellow workers. Once the air conditioner was shut down and replaced with a quieter unit, productivity improved and rejects and injuries also decreased. [Pg.53]
