Outdated technology

A large number of procedures are now available for measuring fire properties, but many of them are of little interest since they represent outdated technologies. Thus, in order to obtain a realistic estimate of fire hazard for a scenario it is essential to measure relevant fire properties. Furthermore, the appropriate instruments have to be used, viz. those yielding results known to correlate with full scale fire test results. 

Several taxonomies of stressors in the work environment can be found (e.g. Cooper and Marshall 1976 Cox 1978 Cox et al. 2000 Fletcher 1988, 1991 Warr 1987) and considerable consensus and overlap in the work stressors identified can be found. Factors such as financial remuneration, poor physical work environment, outdated technology, high workload, excessive responsibility, low social position, lack of autonomy and control, variety in job, external job demands/goals, role conflict and ambiguity, lack of support and poor career prospects have all been identified as sources of stress in the work environment (Fletcher 1988 Warr 1987). 

Most of the increase in production occurred during-the 1979/80-1984/85 period and was contributed by growth in fertilizer production in Eurasia. Economic and political reforms are responsible for the recent decline in production, Specifically, depressed demand, removal of subsidies, the high cost of energy and raw materials, and low capacity utilization resulting from outdated technology and poor maintenance have contributed to decreased production. Sudden withdrawal of governmental support without the provision of an alternative and adequate financial and institutional support also contributed to this process. 

Once operational gaps are identified, assessment methods (Chapters 5-8 for energy operation. Chapters 12 and 13 for process operation, and Chapter 16 for utility system operation) are then applied to identify root causes— potential causes include inefficient process operation, insufficient maintenance, inadequate operating practices, procedures, and control, inefficient energy system design, and outdated technology. Assessment results are translated into specific corrective actions to achieve targets via either manual adjustments, the best practices, or by automatic control systems. Finally, the results are tracked to measure the improvements and benefits achieved.
