Additionally, two other reactors, the international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER) for which the location is under negotiation, and the Tokamak Physics Experiment at PPPL, Princeton, New Jersey, are proposed. The most impressive advances have been obtained on the three biggest tokamaks, TETR, JET, andJT-60, which are located in the United States, Europe, and Japan, respectively. As of this writing fusion energy development in the United States is dependent on federal binding (10—12). [Pg.154]

Occupational Safety and Health J ct. OSHA regulations deal principally with physical aspects of safety and those things generally associated with accident prevention. These federal regulations deal especially with the need for estabHshed material safety data sheets and the proper labeling of printing inks under the Hazard Communication Laws. [Pg.253]

Descriptions of sulfuric acid analytical procedures not specified by ASTM are available (32,152). Federal specifications also describe the requited method of analysis. Concentrations of 78 wt % and 93 wt % H2SO4 are commonly measured indirectly by determining specific gravity. Higher acid concentrations are normally determined by titration with a base, or by sonic velocity or other physical property for plant control. Sonic velocity has been found to be quite accurate for strength analysis of both filming and nonfuming acid. [Pg.192]

Air Quality Related Value (AQRV) a resource, as identified by the ELM for one or more Federal areas, that may be adversely affected by a change in air quality. The resource may include visibility or a specific scenic, cultural, physical, biological, ecological, or recreational resource identified by the ELM for a particular area. "These values include visibility and those scenic, cultural, biological, and recreation resources of an area that are affected by air quality" (43 Fed. Reg. 15016). [Pg.517]

In Germany, deflagration and detonation flame arresters are tested and approved by the German Federal Physical-Technical Institnte (PTB) in Brannschweig and the German Federal Institnte for Material Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin. However, once the new Enropean Committee for Standardization (CEN) standard is approved, it will supersede the PTB and BAM procedures. [Pg.12]

The most valuable attribute of the laboratories is the vast human and physical resources that can be called upon to solve national problems of great complexity and scope. However, without a national problem or crisis on the horizon, as was the case in the 1990s, the vast funding needed to tnaintain this national resource comes into question. And since the laboratories are all funded almost exclusively by federal dollars, the ultimate customer is the U.S. taxpayer, a taxpayer who asks What have I received for my investment Wliat can I hope for in the future ... [Pg.819]

The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 regulates die manufacture, distribution, and dispensing of drugs that have abuse potential (see information under Federal Drag Legislation and Enforcement in diis chapter). Drag under the Controlled Substances Act are divided into five schedules, based on their potential for abuse and physical and psychological dependence Display 1-2 describes the five schedules. [Pg.4]

Depreciation is important for two reasons. First, it reduces federal income taxes, because the amount of depreciation occurring in any one year is considered as an expense. Second, it is a means whereby the stockholder can assess the physical value of a company. [Pg.339]

Salvage value is the price that can be actually obtained or is imputed to be obtained from the sale of used property if, at the end of its usage, the equipment (property) still has some utility. Salvage value is influenced by the current cost of equivalent equipment, its commercial value, whether the equipment must be dismantled and relocated to have utility for others, and the (projected) physical condition of the equipment. Salvage value can be thought of as a cash flow that may occur several years in the future, but does not represent income for federal income tax purposes when received. [Pg.625]

A revision of the Pure Food and Drug Act, the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act, passed in 1938, added several provisions that impacted the food industry. Among those provisions were authorized factory inspections and the authority for court injunction to the previous seizure and prosecution actions (Janssen, 1992). Adulterated food was now defined as Sec. 402, A food shall be deemed to be adulterated if it consists in whole or in part of any filthy, putrid, or decomposed substance, or if it is otherwise unfit for food, or if it has been prepared, packed or held under unsanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with filth, or whereby it may have been rendered injurious to health. The importance of the whereby clause is the concept that a food product need not be contaminated physically to be considered adulterated, but has been exposed to conditions that may have resulted in contamination of the food. This situation is vastly different from that which existed at the time the 1906 Food and Drug Act was passed. [Pg.243]
