Uses. Tballium compounds have limited use in industrial appHcations. The use of thaHous sulfate in rodenticides and insecticides has been replaced by other compounds less harmful to animals (see Insect control technology Pesticides). Tb allium sulfide has been used in photoelectric cells (see Photovoltaic cells). A thallium bromide—thallium iodide mixture is used to transmit infrared radiation for signal systems. ThaHous oxide is used in the manufacture of glass (qv) that has a high coefficient of refraction. Tb allium formate—malonate aqueous solutions (Cletici s solution) have been used in mineral separations. Many thallium compounds have been used as reagents in organic synthesis in researchlaboratoti.es. [Pg.470]

Cadmium sulfate (CdS), also called orange cadmium, is used to produce phosphors and fluorescent screens. It is also used as a pigment in inks and paints, to color ceramics glazes, in the manufacture of transistors in electronics, photovoltaic cells, and solar cells, and in fireworks. [Pg.145]

In spite of the high level of commercial success of inorganic semi-conductor based photovoltaic cells, they are unlikely to challenge seriously electricity generation from fossil fuels because they are costly to manufacture and it is also difficult to make large area cells. These difficulties have spurred on research into organic alternatives, especially those that can be incorporated into or be part of a polymer, thus making cell construction easier. [Pg.290]

Peak Watt A manufacturer s unit indicating the amount of power a photovoltaic cell or module will produce at standard test conditions (normally 1,000 watts per square meter and 25 degrees Celsius). [Pg.24]

Another way that nanotechnology may impact solar cells is the use of quantum dots instead of silicon. Quantum dots, which are nanoscale semiconductor crystals, could significantly lower the cost of photovoltaic cells. In 2006, Victor Klimov of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico demonstrated that quantum dots have the capability to react to light and store energy more efficiently than silicon. Although scientists are years away from actually manufacturing usable quantum dot solar cells on a commercial scale, the technology has been established. [Pg.67]

There have been a number of studies on fuels used for electricity generation. One of these studies focuses on the use of natural gas, heavy oil, or coal in cogeneration of electricity.112 Using a numerical eco-load total standardized evaluation system, these authors found that coal had the lowest eco-load of all alternatives considered. In another LCA study, Goralczyk113 compares hydroelectric, photovoltaic cells, wind turbines, oil, coal, and natural gas and quantifies that electricity from hydropower had the least environmental impact. Schleisner114 focuses on wind farms in a life-cycle inventory study that focuses on the materials used to manufacture the windmills and reports that 2% of the electricity generated during the windmill s lifetime is used to manufacture the windmill components. [Pg.260]
