Photosynthesis biosynthesis

Bleaching Herbicides. Membrane-based modes of herbicidal action relevant to photosynthesis (37) include those of inhibitors of carotenoid biosynthesis, eg, norflura2on, diftmon, y -phenoxyben2amines inhibitors of chlorophyll biosynthesis, eg, oxadia2on, DTP or... [Pg.43]

Bacterial Photosynthesis A light-dependent, anaerobic mode of metabolism. Carbon dioxide is reduced to glucose, which is used for both biosynthesis and energy production. Depending on the hydrogen source used to reduce COj, both photolithotrophic and photoorganotrophic reactions exist in bacteria. [Pg.606]

As we began this chapter, we saw that photosynthesis traditionally is equated with the process of COg fixation, that is, the net synthesis of carbohydrate from COg. Indeed, the capacity to perform net accumulation of carbohydrate from COg distinguishes the phototrophic (and autotrophic) organisms from het-erotrophs. Although animals possess enzymes capable of linking COg to organic acceptors, they cannot achieve a net accumulation of organic material by these reactions. For example, fatty acid biosynthesis is primed by covalent attachment of COg to acetyl-CoA to form malonyl-CoA (Chapter 25). Nevertheless, this fixed COg is liberated in the very next reaction, so no net COg incorporation occurs. [Pg.731]

In tracing the evolutionary development of iron ligands it is of interest to examine the machinery employed by organisms which carry out reactions on those substances believed to have been present on the primitive Earth. Specific substrates acted on by this group include, besides ferrous iron itself, hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen gas, methane and reduced nitrogen compounds. Species which perform photosynthesis may be presumed to have the capacity to synthesize protoporphyrin IX since this substance is an intermediate in chlorophyll biosynthesis (43). [Pg.157]

Photosynthesis is an energy-building process involving biosynthesis of simple carbohydrates such as glucose and starch from inorganic materials such as carbon dioxide and... [Pg.256]

Since D-fructose and D-glucose phosphates are amongst the first products of photosynthesis, and since starch (in plants) and glycogen (in animals) are converted by phosphorylase to D-glucosyl phosphate, biosynthesis of carbohydrates revolves around these ubiquitous compounds... [Pg.201]

Carbohydrates are among the most abundant constituents of plants, animals, and microorganisms. Polymeric carbohydrates function as important food reserves, and as stmctural components in cell walls. Animals and most microorganisms are dependent upon the carbohydrates produced by plants for their very existence. Carbohydrates are the first products formed in photosynthesis, and are the products from which plants S5mthesize their own food reserves, as well as other chemical constituents. These materials then become the foodstuffs of other organisms. The main pathways of carbohydrate biosynthesis and degradation comprise an important component of... [Pg.463]

The toxic effects of ozone in plant systems have been studied for some time, yet the actual mechanisms of injury are not fully understood. In addition to visible necrosis which appears largely on upper leaf surfaces, many other physiological and biochemical effects have been recorded ( ). One of the first easily measurable effects is a stimulation of respiration. Frequently, however, respiration may not increase without concomitant visible injury. Furthermore, photosynthesis in green leaves as measured by CO2 assimilation, may decrease. It is well known that ozone exposure is accompanied by a dramatic increase in free pool amino acids ( ). Ordin and his co-workers ( ) have clearly shown the effect of ozone on cell wall biosynthesis. In addition, ozone is known to oxidize certain lipid components of the cell ( ), to affect ribosomal RNA (16) and to alter the fine structure of chloroplasts (7 ). [Pg.8]

There are a number of other herbicides that affect photosynthesis indirectly. Pyrazole herbicides such as benzofenap, pyrazolynate and pyrazoxyfen interfere with chlorophyll biosynthesis and have found commercial application for the control of annual and perennial weeds in paddy rice and maize (Figure 2.4). [Pg.25]

Animals acquire many of their nutrients in a ready made form from the food that they eat. Plants, however, have to biosynthesise everything that they need for efficient growth. The first section of this chapter discussed photosynthesis, a fundamental biosynthetic process, but plants also synthesise other components that animals do not. These biosynthetic processes are good examples of potentially plant selective herbicidal targets. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and as such their biosynthesis is one such process. [Pg.28]

The pyridazin-3-ones are interesting because they include herbicides having two different modes of action, distinguished only by small changes in substitution pattern. Thus pyrazon (8) (61GEP1105232) is a photosynthesis inhibitor, while other discussed later are carotenoid biosynthesis inhibitors. The pyridazin-3-one ring is constructed by condensation of phenyl-hydrazine with 3,4-dichloro-2,5-dihydro-5-hydroxyfuran-2-one (9), in turn produced by chlorination of furan-2-carbaldehyde. Amination of (10) then occurs exclusively at the 5-position to give pyrazon (Scheme 4). [Pg.188]

In examining routes of biosynthesis it is helpful to identify some key intermediates. One of these is 3-phosphoglycerate. This compound is a primary product of photosynthesis and may reasonably be regarded as the starting material from which all other carbon compounds in nature are formed. Phospho-... [Pg.973]

Ethanoic acid is activated for biosynthesis by combination with the thiol, coenzyme A (CoASH, Figure 18-7) to give the thioester, ethanoyl (acetyl) coenzyme A (CH3COSC0A). You may recall that the metabolic degradation of fats also involves this coenzyme (Section 18-8F) and it is tempting to assume that fatty acid biosynthesis is simply the reverse of fatty acid metabolism to CH3COSCoA. However, this is not quite the case. In fact, it is a general observation in biochemistry that primary metabolites are synthesized by different routes from those by which they are metabolized (for example, compare the pathways of carbon in photosynthesis and metabolism of carbohydrates, Sections 20-9,10). [Pg.1480]

In addition to their plasma membrane eukaryotic cells also contain internal membranes that define a variety of organelles (fig. 17.2). Each of these organelles is specialized for particular functions The nucleus synthesizes nucleic acids, mitochondria oxidize carbohydrates and lipids and make ATP, chloroplasts carry out photosynthesis, the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus synthesize and secrete proteins, and lysosomes digest proteins. Additional membranes divide mitochondria and chloroplasts into even finer, more specialized subcompartments. Like the plasma membrane, organellar membranes act as barriers to the leakage of proteins, metabolites, and ions they contain transport systems for import and export of materials, and they are the sites of enzymatic activities as diverse as cholesterol biosynthesis and oxidative phosphorylation. [Pg.382]

Photosynthesis. The biosynthesis that directly harnesses the chemical energy resulting from the absorption of light. Frequently used to refer to the formation of carbohydrates from CO2 that occurs in the chloroplasts of plants or the plastids of photosynthetic microorganisms. [Pg.916]
