Instrument Designs for Infrared Absorption The simplest instrument for IR absorption spectroscopy is a filter photometer similar to that shown in Figure 10.24 for UV/Vis absorption. These instruments have the advantage of portability and typically are used as dedicated analyzers for gases such as ITCN and CO. [Pg.393]

As a result of these considerations, the primary difference between a spectrophotometer and a light-scattering photometer is the fact that the photodetector is mounted on an arm which pivots at the sample so that intensity measurements can be made at various angles. [Pg.690]

Commercial Hquid sodium alumiaates are normally analyzed for total alumiaa and for sodium oxide by titration with ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid [60-00-4] (EDTA) or hydrochloric acid. Further analysis iacludes the determiaation of soluble alumiaa, soluble siHca, total iasoluble material, sodium oxide content, and carbon dioxide. Aluminum and sodium can also be determiaed by emission spectroscopy. The total iasoluble material is determiaed by weighing the ignited residue after extraction of the soluble material with sodium hydroxide. The sodium oxide content is determiaed ia a flame photometer by comparison to proper standards. Carbon dioxide is usually determiaed by the amount evolved, as ia the Underwood method. [Pg.140]

High Pressure Liquid Chromatography. This modem version of the classical column chromatography technique is also used successfully for separation and quantitative analysis of dyes. It is generally faster than thin-layer or paper chromatography however, it requires considerably more expensive equipment. The latest trend is to smaller beads in smaller columns, as this saves eluent and shortens the time for a chromatographic analysis. This argument can be correct if only one suitable detector is used. However, these modern small columns are not optimal for a combination of detectors. So-called multiple detection is a combination of some detectors with different measurement principles (differential refractometer, spectral photometer, light-scattering detector, on-line viscometer) behind the last column, mostly in series, seldom in a branched ( parallel ) order. In this way, the tedious preparative fractionation of a polymer sample can often be avoided. [Pg.440]

E. Photoelectric photometer method (Section 17.6). In this method the human eye is replaced by a suitable photoelectric cell the latter is employed to afford a direct measure of the light intensity, and hence of the absorption. Instruments incorporating photoelectric cells measure the light absorption and not the colour of the substance for this reason the term photoelectric colorimeters is a misnomer better names are photoelectric comparators, photometers, or, best, absorptiometers. [Pg.653]
