ATR-FTIR spectrum of poly (vinyl chloride) photograph pocket with phthalate plasticizer shows peaks due to both PVC and plasticizer. Units are wavelengths cm on the horizontal axis and per cent transmittance on the vertical axis. [Pg.136]

A cockled and distorted PVC photograph pocket has lost plasticizer after 30 years in use (left). Crystals of phthalic acid are visible on the upper surface of the positive image due to hydrolysis of DEHP (right). [Pg.187]

FIGURE 1.7 Three typical cellulose fibers adsorbed on the wall of a glass poured with champagne the gas pockets trapped inside the fibers lumen and responsible for bubble formation clearly appear (bar = 100 pm) (Photographs by Gerard Liger-Belair). [Pg.14]

FIGURE 1.17 Detail of the cellulose fiber displayed in Fig. 1.16, which clearly shows the establishment of a micrometric gas bridge between the two gas pockets trapped inside the fiber s lumen (bar = 10 pm photograph by Gerard Liger-Belair). [Pg.26]

Millions of years ago, the Great Plains of the United States were ocean. As sea levels fell and at the same time the North American continent rose, many isolated pockets of seawater, called saline lakes, formed. Over time, these lakes evaporated, leaving behind the solids that had been dissolved in the seawater. Most abundant was sodium chloride, which collected in cubic crystals referred to by mineralogists as the mineral halite. When conditions were right, halite crystals like the ones in this chapter s opening photograph would grow to be several centimeters across. [Pg.185]

Technology continues to change. Computer technology has changed the toolbox for nearly every professional field and it impacts safety practice as well. At first, personal, desktop computers took over the role of most mainframe systems. Now applications work on cell phones and tablets and allow individuals to carry tools with them in their pockets or briefcases. Technology has compressed information storage. Volumes of paper records, photographs, hard copy books, and other documents now fit into memory devices the size of a button. [Pg.610]

Cast film is converted to products that include bags for clothing articles such as mens shirts, pocket-pages for photographs, sheet protectors, and as the outer nonporous sheet on disposable diapers. Cast film also is found in some tapes and pressure-sensitive labels. [Pg.31]
