Phosphorus-Containing Organic Compounds

Similar to halogenated organic fire retardants, many phosphorus-containing organics are liquids and, thus, may be classified as additives rather than as fire-retardant solid functional fillers. Although they do not fall within the scope of this book, they are briefly mentioned since they may synergistically act in combination with more traditional fire retardants. They include the following  

The polyurethane industry is searching for a more environmentally acceptable alternative to pentabromodiphenyl ether, which has been banned in Europe and voluntarily withdrawn in the United States. The preference appears to be in favor of phosphorus-containing materials.

Organophosphate or Organophosphorus Compound—A phosphorus containing organic compound and especially a pesticide that acts by inhibiting cholinesterase. 

The OH radical reactions with a number of nitrogen-, sulfur- and phosphorus-containing organic compounds appear to proceed, at least in part, by an initial addition reaction (Atkinson, 1989,1994 Kwok et al., 1996), although the products observed may in some cases be those expected from H-atom abstraction. Note that the recent study of Talukdar et al. (1997) indicates that the reactions of the OH radical with alkyl nitrates proceed only by H-atom abstraction, and Table 14.1 gives the applicable substituent group factors for alkyl nitrates.
