If sulfuric acid, H2SO4, is added to an aqueous solution of formic acid, carbon monoxide bubbles out rapidly. This also occurs if phosphoric add, HjPO, is added instead. The common factor is that both of these acids release hydrogen ions, H+. Yet, careful analysis shows that the concentration of hydrogen ion is constant during the rapid decomposition of formic acid. Cellulase and all chemicals used in this work were obtained from Sigma. Hydrolysis experiments were conducted by adding a fixed amount of 2 x 2 mm oflSce paper to flasks containing cellulase in 0.05 M acetate buffer (pH = 4.8). Generally, cement-forming liquids are aqueous solutions of inorganic or organic adds. These adds include phosphoric add, multifunctional carboxylic adds, phenolic bodies and certain metal halides and sulphates (Table 2.1). There are also non-aqueous cement-forming liqtiids which are multidentate acids with the ability to form complexes. [Pg.5]

Crisp et al. (1978) were able to detect the formation of crystallites both on the surface and in the bulk of the reaction product.
