The matrix can be either a thermoset or thermoplastic. The oldest and still widest used material for compression molded products is phenolic. The thermoset materials used to manufacture fiber reinforced compression molded articles is unsaturated polyester sheet or bulk, reinforced with glass fibers, known as sheet molding compound (SMC) or bulk molding compound (BMC). In SMC, the 25 mm long reinforcing fibers are randomly oriented in the plane of the sheet and make up for 20-30% of the molding compound s volume fraction. 

The resin matrix can be either thermosetting or thermoplastic. Thermosetting resins such as epoxy, polyimide, polyester, and phenolic are used in applications where physical properties are important. Polyester and epoxy composites make up the bulk of the thermoset composite market. Of these two, polyesters dominate by far. Reinforced with glass fiber, these are known as fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRPs). FRPs are molded by layup and spray-up methods or by compression molding either a preform or sheet molding compound (SMC). 

Glass-Reinforced Composites. These composites are prepared from SMC and by liquid injection molding, (LIM). Phenolic resins are usually not amenable to LIM because of the volatiles generated. However, a resin suitable to LIM has been prepared (107). The properties of the 60% glass-mat-reinforced product obtained from this resin were compared to conventional isophthalic polyester and vinyl ester sheet-molding compounds at equivalent glass loading the mechanical... 

A typical mixture of a general molding compound is shown in Table 12, and a sheet molding formulation is given in Table 13. Sheet molding compounds are in increasing demand in automotive, transportation, construction and appliance markets. These phenolics are nonflammable and give off little smoke, unlike poly esters. Again, as in many other fields covered in the book, modified epoxies are the most studied systems (toughened epoxies for adhesive coatings and composites). But also rubber-modified phenolics and low-profile unsaturated polyesters for sheet and bulk molding compounds have been extensively studied. 

Data sheet values. Table 2.28 lists the property values for a broad range of phenolic molding compounds, including both the resole (single-stage) and the novolac (two-stage) compounds.
