An aspect that has not received enough attention is the influence of pressure on the vitrification curve (Chapter 10). For some processes that operate at very high pressures there is a significant shift of the vitrification curve to lower temperatures for example, in the processing of phenolic molding compounds, where the polymerization may be arrested by vitrification at much lower temperatures than those predicted using Tg vs conversion values determined at ambient pressure. 

The parameter W2 is called the Arrhenius number. It varies from values of about 15 for low-activation energy systems (e.g., thermosetting polyurethanes), to values of about 40 for high-activation energy systems (e.g., phenolic molding compounds).

Ugnin Lignin is a colorless to brown crystalline product recovered from the paper-pulp sulfite liquor. It is generally available in powder form and used as an extender in furfural and phenolic molding compounds. Lignin is also used as a low-cost extender in adhesives and coatings, especially those used in the construction industry. It is also used as a corrosion inhibitor and as a natural binder to make low-pressure laminates from compressed wood products.

Uncured resins are skin sensitizers and contact should be avoided, as well as breathing the vapor, mist, or dust. Novolak-based pulverized products generally contain hexamethylenetetramine, which may cause rashes and dermatitis. Phenolic molding compounds and pulverized phenolic adhesives must be controlled as potentially explosive dusts. In addition, they contain irritating or toxic additives. ASTM test method D4639-86 (1996) describes the method for volative content in phenolic resins.

Today phenolic resins are a large-volume item achieving sales of approximately 2.6 billion lb in 1990 up from 450 million lb in 1956. The pattern of consumption and sales growth are shown in Tables I and II. The markets for phenolic molding compounds is decreasing in size [14]. As a result of their stability [15] and other useful properties, these resins continue to find widespread use.
