Actual ownership of the PBMs varies. Some companies are privately held corporations (e.g., National Prescription Administrators). Some are publicly traded (e.g., Express Scripts). Some are now or have been owned by managed care organizations (e.g., PacifiCare s ownership of Prescription Solutions or Prudential s ownership of Integrated Pharmacy Solutions). They have also been owned by retail pharmacy chains, as in the case of Rite Aid s ownership of PCS prior to its evolution into Advance PCS. Pharmaceutical manufacturers have purchased PBMs (e.g., Merck owns Medco and Lilly at one time owned PCS). [Pg.742]

Perhaps you are a health science major, looking forward to a career in medicine or pharmacy. If so, you will want to become familiar with the properties of aqueous solutions (Chapters 4,10,14, and 16), which include blood and other body fluids. Chemists today are involved in the synthesis of a variety of life-saving products. These range from drugs used in chemotherapy (Chapter 15) to new antibiotics used against resistant microorganisms. [Pg.2]

The drug is available from the pharmacy in a solution of 20 mEq/15 mL. The nurse administers. ... [Pg.646]

On the other hand, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESMS) has been first combined with electrochemistry at ITIES in order to confirm the stoichiometry of a complex ion transferred into an organic phase directly. ESMS is now becoming a popular and powerful technique not only in chemistry but also in biology, pharmacy, medical science, etc. Electrospray (ES) ionization is exceedingly effective resource for producing gas-phase ions from various solutions which contain any kinds of ion. Thus, ESMS can sometimes give us highly useful information in comparison with electrochemical results. [Pg.630]

If certain NBC-OD are not available from local manufactures and must be imported there are two alternative solutions to establish a manufacturing facility (or a pharmacy laboratory) supported with government funds or the establishment of a central agency for import and distribution of antidotes, under governmental control. The decision depends on the economical and technological capabilities. [Pg.139]

Many elderly have vision and co-ordination problems. This is problematic for reading and opening containers and package leaflets pour solutions, dripping eye-drops etcetera. Several aids are commercially available and sold at pharmacies. [Pg.105]

Only solutions of lipophilic antibiotics are able to cross the external barrier of the cornea (drops) and the internal blood-retina barrier (systemic administration) to yield sufficient concentrations in the internal eye (vitreous). Keratitis and ulceration of the cornea can be treated by frequent administration of highly concentrated (fortified) antibiotic drops. In endophtalmitis, emergency vitreous aspirate and in-travitreal and subconjunctival injection of antibiotic solutions with a long half-life is the cornerstone of treatment. These solutions should be prepared by the hospital pharmacy. Empiric topical treatment of minor external eye infections consists of antibiotic containing gels or ointments. [Pg.538]

In 1962, Pierre Eymard, a graduate smdent at the University of Lyon, synthesized a series of khellin derivatives. Khellin is a biologically active substance that occurs in the fruit of the wild Arabian Khell plant and which has been used for centuries by herbalists for the treatment of kidney stones. Eymard arranged to have his new compounds biologically evaluated at the Ecole de Medecine et de Pharmacie in nearby Grenoble. When attempts to produce a solution of these khellin compounds failed, advice was sought from H. Meunier of the nearby Laboratoire Berthier. In view of Berthier s recent peripheral interest in valproic acid as a solvent for bismuth compounds, Meunier recommended valproic acid as a nontoxic inert solvent. [Pg.112]
